I have read and researched that the 5th gear syncronizers are a common thing to go out. When I shift to 5th gear, it kind of grinds a little. I asked a friend that is good with transmissions to fix it, but he said it sounds like a bent shift fork. Says 5th gear is the least used gear, but the 5th gear syncronizer is a common problem correct? I just want to make sure that the syncronizer is what is wrong, and if there is a good place to get a replacement, and anything else involved when I take the transmission apart.

its most likely your 5th gear synch... i have had that same problem with 2 of my trannies

GreyGT-C 04-10-2005 05:31 PM

yup... should look into doing a close ratio 5th gear while you're at it..... that way you actually have a useful gear at that.

the 5th gear synchro isnt strong enough to slow down the fd's 5th gear, it actually splits fromt the torque. this is the kinda thing that happens when you add a 5th gear onto a 4 speed box from 1971....

funny thing is that you can make them 6 speeds.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

It's the 5th gear synchro. You have a 93, and the synchro was upgraded in later production models. If you friend has experience with transmissions, then it will be an easy fix. A friend helped me with mine, and once the transmission was out, it only took an hour or so to do. While your at it, replace the shift select spindle too, it was also upgraded in later models with a stronger spring, which helps avoid the missed shifts that probably caused the synchro to go in the first place. Neither part is expensive and the spindle takes about 2 minutes and two bolts to change out.

Call Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda 1-888-533-3400. He'll know exactly what you need, has good prices and free shipping.

I'd always heard that it was caused by missed shifts... 2nd to 5th and missing 3rd? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Of course, "I" never did that, it's just what I heard. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

yeah its usually a missed shift, if you mis shift a miata though the synchro doesnt snap. all the r boxes have a tendancy to break 5th gear synchros, my t2 was broken, the b2600 parts truck was broken, the taller 5th gear does seem to cause a higher failure rate though

rx7girltk 04-11-2005 03:03 PM

my car doesnt shift into 5th easily and doesnt go into reverse at all..so i bought a 5th gear synchro, shift select spindle, and a 5th/rev. shift fork...going to be changing those in about 2 weeks probably
