I am looking for info on repairing my 5th gear syncro. I have my engine and tranny out so I am looking to see how much it would cost if I do it. If there is anywhere to find instructions on how to do it that would be appreciated.

I've done it....just be warned, once you crack open the transmission, you might as well go through the whole thing. You'll have to take most of the bearings out, so they should be replaced while you're there...and if your transmission is anything like mine was, you'll probably find at least one more synchro, that needs replaced, and possibly even a gear. I think my transmission parts came to about $500 all told, but not sure since I ordered them with a lot of other parts last winter.

As for difficulty, that just depends on how comfortable you are rebuilding a transmission. Buy the shop manual, follow it step by step, and you should be ok.

I've done my 5th gear. I had the shop manual, and it wasn't that big of a deal. The 5th gear is the first gear you encounter when you crack open the tranny, so unless you're having problems with the other gears, its not really worth going through the entire thing. Definitely buy the shop manual, and you might also want to upgrade the shift select spindle while you're there, its on the outside the the tranny and isn't a big deal, you can read up a bit here: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/shift_s...ct_spindle.html

1. remove battery cables

2. remove transmission

3. remove tailshaft housing of transmission

4. press off rear bearings

5. remove 5th gear, inspect gear, synchro, and hub for damage, replace with the new

6. assembly is reverse of removal
