I'm trying to install a new alternator belt, with out the Emissions pump. I heard the size i need is 285 k4 or k6.. I just bought the belt today but the damn thing won't fit.....crap...now what?!! Do i also need to replace the pulleys or what? thx

turbovr6 04-22-2004 05:27 PM

is it too small or too big? either way the part # denotes the lenght of the belt. so the next part number up will be roughly 1/2" longer. or next number down will be 1/2 in shorter

blaze08 04-22-2004 05:29 PM

It's too small....the alternator is as low as it can possibly go. Damn belts...

Blaze, a favor? When you find the right size, could you post it? I may be doing the same thing soon Thanks.

TURBOX2 04-22-2004 10:43 PM

i tried to do the same thing and i went to every store i could think of and tried numerous belts and never once did i find a correct size. I just ended up getting the greddy pulley's. They cost about 130 or so and it comes with the correct belt. Thats the way i woudl go man...good luck!

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...withstupid.gif I tried like 10 belts in two days. Never found one to fit... I'm installing the Unorthodox pulley set soon and I'll be trying 10 more belts... I might go with the Unorthodox/Greddy mix, I've heard it works.

All you have to do is take a string to find length of the belt you need. Then take your existing and go to the parts store. They have lists of belts by length and number of ribs.

The greddy unorthodox combo DOES work, and I have the perfect belt. When I get home I'll post the number! Unfortunately.. It WONT work much else.. Just the UR main pulley and the Greddy Alt and Water pulleys.

TURBOX2 04-23-2004 11:12 AM

only_1--Its just not that easy. Thats what i did as well but the problem is gettign the correct 5 ribbed belt in the size. They just do not make them (at least at carquest, autozone, bap geon, advanced auto parts, pepboys...etc) You get the picture. And as 9base3 said the greddy/unorthodox combo DOES work!

turbovr6 04-23-2004 03:09 PM

I know back in the day, I ran no airpump with all stock pullys.

It does work, I got a Gates belt that fit just fine.

blaze08 04-23-2004 05:01 PM

well i bought the 285 mm k 4 and that didnt' fit....i hear now that it's the 300mm k4 that i need.... but the store closed on me. i have to wait till tomorrow now. and if i could use a string i would of if my damn belt didnt' brake into pieces.lol

only_1 04-23-2004 09:58 PM

I worked in a parts store until a couple months ago. I know they had the gates belt still in stock.

TURBOX2 04-24-2004 02:50 AM

sorry if i came off sounding like i know everything or that they dont make the belt (i didnt mean that at all)...i just meant that i looked at everyshop around me and could not find one to fit. I know its got to be out there as Turbovr6 said. Good luck tom!

I've seen problems with the water pump belt slipping when eleminating the airpump and keeping stock pullies. Spend the $100 or so on some pullies and do it right.

AgentSpeed 04-25-2004 07:23 PM

I agree. I don't want to cause heating problems at all. I bought the full set of Unorthodox but now I'm going to go with the combo. I just haven't seen the Greddy's in black. I don't want my engine bay to look like a two year old went crazy with crayons...lol

CourageOO7 04-26-2004 01:48 PM

a 330 series belt should do the trick with the stock pullies

blaze08 04-27-2004 03:45 PM

I finally bought the 300mm k4 belt that fit in perfectly and now my car's running great...i'm saving up to get the unorthodox pulley set. the set i saw is $425.00 damn that's alot..

ccarlisi 04-28-2004 12:40 AM

No need to spend $ on a pulley, just grind the stock tension adjustment bracket to allow for a wider range of adjustment. It took me about 20minutes to grind and repaint.
