Hi, I've been a member of rx7club and thought I'd jump over here too. I own'ed a 86 rx-7 that I recently sold but am shopping for a another. Just checking in https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

O, and I'm from ND.

I'm currently looking at a 88 gxl. Its maroon-ish with a mint body, not a single spot of rust. The only think is that the motor is on its last leg. It's overheating bad according to the gauge but it doesn't run like it is. And I think the coolant seal is shot but again, it doesn't run like it is. The rear rotor has ~45psi on it so I'm not sure yet. I offered 1500 and he wants 2000.

There are several causes to overheating, mostly easy to fix. If the coolant seals are bad, you'll see white, sweet-smelling smoke coming out the exhaust.

PSI on the rotor doesn't matter as much as having 3 even bounces on the compression tester gauge when turning the engine over.

The reason I think its terminal is because it had absolutely no power at all. It was pretty dead the entire powerband.

I drove for a while with a blown apex seal (confirmed by compression test), and it actually still had decent power (for an n/a), I was surprised. It's pretty obvious thought, it sounds almost like a Harley.

I'm pretty sure blown coolant or oil seals won't effect power, it would only make a lot of smoke (and use up the fluids). If it has a blow apex seal, the compression test should confirm it, and the exhaust sound like it's skipping a beat (almost like a Harley). I drove my car for awhile with a blown apex seal ('86 n/a), and it still had decent-enough power, I could accelerate almost as quickly as before, and I could still hold highway speeds without a problem.

There might be other issues robbing the power. If there's no obvious smoke in the exhaust, and there's 3 even bounces on the compression gauge for each rotor, I'd say it's easily repairable.

But wait for some other opinions, I could be wrong.

Yea that is what has me confused, is that there is no, literally no smoke when I kick it down. And it idle so nicely, 700rpms and didn't skip a beat. My 86 was a base model, does a/c and power steering rob enough power to do that, cuz my old 86 would blow this car away, no contest.

It might have clogged cats, non-working auxiliary port actuators, a clogged air filter, clogged fuel injectors, it can be several things. None of which are particularly difficult to remedy.

I'll move this to the 2nd gen section, you should get more replies there.
