I know I have an LSD because my car is a GXL. So why is only one wheel spinning? Is my LSD screwed up or what? How can I fix this? BTW my fron diff mount is broken so I know that needs to be replaced but only one wheel spun before that happened.
Thanks |
I'm not too sure on this, but wasn't the lsd an option in 90 - 91? Jack up the rear end and check it by spinning the wheel by hand.
|
You just swapped in a j spec, right? Are you using the GXL rear end?
|
Yes, I swapped in a jspec. I still have the original rear end in though. According to my VIN. I have the LSD option.
|
Maybe it's broken. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Both wheels DO spin when jacked up, but one spins faster than the other. |
With an open diff the other wheel would spin the opposite direction.
I'm not too sure what breaks in the lsd unit, but that may be you problem. |
89-90 GXL's don't have LSD.
|
i could be wrong but I could've SWORE that I had that option. Then again it may explain the problem.
Maybe it's time to hit the salvage yard... S4 GTU's had LSD's right? |
in my 89 GTU with open diff. i could lay down rubber for 30ft. don't ask how or why but i have pix https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png also i have a 89 GTUs 4.33 LSD diff for sale that was supposed to go on my GTU but i sold the car.

So when you spin the tires does one spin the other way, or both in the same direction?
|
I'm bettin' they're spinning in the same direction, or he'd be spinning like a top! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif Hard to believe it isn't a limited slip diff though.
|
just be careful when you go get an s4 lsd because the clutch types wear out.
|
dude i say if your gonna put another diff in the car save up and buy an aftermarket performance diff or a new factory diff. buying a used one you never know the condition its in or how long its gonna last you.
like i always say if it breaks upgrade it! |
I've never heard of any aftermarket diff. for the FC. Vosko, how much you want for the GTUs LSD?
|
$300 + shipping. its a complete drop in. it has fresh redline gear oil in it too
|
AHHH $300 plus shipping? Thats gonna be a shitload. How bout $300 shipped?
|
i'm a reasonable guy https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png you have a PM

I'm not too sure what breaks in the lsd unit, but that may be you problem. Clutchpacks/sycnrhos wear out or the sleeves break on them usually. I've see a fractured carrier but that was SERIOUS abuse. Not even real sure what type of system the Mazda uses, guess I'll have to go look... |

Hi, I am new to this board, and to RX7's. But I saw that you guys said that when jacked up, that both wheels should turn, but one in the opposite direction. I have an 87 N/A, and when I turn one wheel, the other does not turn at all. And when it is in reverse, the right wheel doesn't turn at all, when the car is jacked up. I was having a problem with the tranny, or something along the line so this would help me out greatly.
|
Didn't Mazda first use a Clutch type LSD and then switch to a TORSEN?
|
The object of the LSD rear end is to make it so that both wheel turn at the same speed most of the time. If you have the rearend jacked up and the tranny out of gear with a LSD both wheel should spin the same direction. If it is in gear it will probably be harder to turn and one might go backwards, this is the action that you get while cornering. If you do not have LSD then when the rearend is lifted both wheels will turn opposite all the time. It is possible to leave to tracks with no LSD it just high RPM Starts usually. I do not know exactly what it means if you turn one and the other does not spin, unless this is happening with the tranny engaged.

S5 LSD = viscous |
[QUOTE]unless this is happening with the tranny engaged.
The transmission was not ingaged when I was turning the one wheel, and the other wheel did not turn at all. |
it seemed that all of you who only has 1 wheel spinning didnt put your car in gear while trying....give it another shot....
mine is not an LSD....CRAP! |

I picked up a diff from the junkyard in an 91 gxl, and it turned out to be an open diff. Ordered a LSD from mazda dismantling a month ago and they sent me another open diff. I just yesterday recieved finally a LSD unit from mazda dismantling, at least it looks like a pretty new unit, no rust or damage.
Not sure if I should rebuild it before putting it in the car or just slap it in and start doing more 2nd gear donuts https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |
You could go get stuck in the mud, have your nieghbor stand behind
you and see if they both spin. (you know kinda like here hold on to this plug wire while i crank engine,to see if i gots spark) |
