I found a brown 88 gxl. The guy said he wanted 2500 for it. It is a 5 speed, and has 103000 miles. I havent been able to drive it yet but i will on monday probably. It has a brown interior. It could use a new paint job but its not that bad. What should i look for when i drive it? I know that the shifter bushings need to ne replaced but other than that it looked pretty good on the inside. The car would be for my bro and it is between this and an 89 supra turbo auto for 2900.

I paid $2600 for an 87 GXL with ~72,000 miles... pretty clean, photos of the car when I got it here:

... The only thing wrong when I bought it that I was aware of was a rear wheel bearing (it grumbled alot when driving) and the dealer said it blew some smoke in the morning and that it had leaky valve seals (heh, right)... $2500 isnt too bad if you ask me, if it's in good condition (interior, exterior, doesnt blow smoke, shifts nicely etc...)

listen for noises on the test drive, watch for smoke, make sure you get to start it cold... I was helping a friend shop around for a TurboII and one guy would always run the car before we showed up to look at it (a few times...) and the car never produced boost when I test drove it. I imagine it also blew a bunch of smoke after cold start, maybe even ran rough.... watch out for that, feel the hood before you start it up, or the engine itself, make sure it's cold https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

The GXL is pretty nice as far as power options go, but it's relatively heavy for a 2nd gen and you may be better off looking for a TurboII or GTU if you can find one for comparable price... but any rotary is better than a reciprocating piston powered car https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

however, my advice is probably really bad to take, I tend to turn my project cars into very deep money pits heh.

hey thanks man

I paid $800 for a 90 GXL with a perfect body and 107K mi. Something to think about

Rotaryman88 07-07-2002 10:30 AM

How old is your bro? A turbo anything really isn't a good choice for a first car if he's thinking about the supra. I'd say go w/ the GXL for a few reasons...insurance, 5spd(everybody should own one), rotary powered, weight(those supras are heavy), and not to mention that supra for 2900...something wrong w/ it...those things retail for much higher then 2900 in good condition, my buddy paid 8K for his '91 w/ 80K miles...

Shane.Trammell 07-07-2002 12:00 PM

My bro is 20. This is not his first car, it would be his 3rd. right now he drives a 1970 chevelle. hes getting rid of that piece and i think he should get the rx7.

Rotaryman88 07-07-2002 12:12 PM

Oh, well if your bro is older then it won't matter w/ turbo or not, lol...I just didn't think it'd be good to buy a turbo supra for a first car. Still go w/ the rotary though...the rx7 handles better https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

yeah if my bro got the supra i would have to teach him how to drive! he will probably end up getting the rx7, i pretty much have the decision

Glad its not flooding there, I have a GXL for sale here in New York, but it would probably make more sense for you to buy it local. This one is the charcoal grey mettalic with the maroon interior. Alot less then $2500 though I can tell you that

It's a good car. I've seen it run. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
