in a s5 how do i turn off power steering?

is there anything wrong with not having power steering? i actually like the feel of non-power steering better.

I believe you have to get a manual steering rack and plug some lines and some other stuff to do it. Im not sure though on all that is involved, seems like a pain in the ass to me.

foopy 12-03-2002 01:24 AM

isnt there just like....a wire i can just pull? that was wut i was hoping for...

Turbo II 12-03-2002 01:27 AM

nope u need a manual sterring rack and have to pull the power one out. correct.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 12-03-2002 01:59 AM

You can just take off the belt. Thats what I'm doing right now in my AE untill I get around to pulling the pump out. You can go get a manual rack that has a better ratio, or you can drain the fluid out of your power rack and plug the holes.

Jerk_Racer 12-03-2002 02:21 AM

Just removing the belt is not enough. With the belt alone removed you are working against a non-functioning pump. That adds about 25% more effort to move it going by what Mazda says. The powersteering rack needs fluid in it. Just don't remove the fluid because the rack will get f'ed up after a while. Removing the pump and plugging the lines doesn't work. Turn the wheel and fluid will try to get out one way or another. Looping the lines might not be enough. Running the lines into a catch tank filled with fluid would be the best thing. This way you always have plenty of fluid lubricating the rack.

I like mine the way it is without the pump. I still need to setup a catch tank. I ran with the unbelted pump for about a year. Once that pump was out the steering effort went down quite a bit. The power steering setup has a quicker steering ratio than the non-power assisted unit. That's enough reason for me to keep it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

so just gotta take out the belt and the pump?

please confirm. thanks.

Jerk_Racer 12-03-2002 03:09 AM

Yes and no. It's OK to just take off the belt. It won't do anything bad. But it will take more effort to push fluid through a non-working pump. Personally I never liked the feel of the T2 powersteering so even fighting an offline pump was cool with me for a long time.

foopy 12-03-2002 04:14 AM

where is this magical power steering killing belt located?

ILUVMY88CABRIO 12-03-2002 06:05 AM

It is the belt closest to the front of the car (I think). I'm warning you though, it is a bitch to turn the wheel when you just remove the belt. I'm running 225s, and having that much rubber on the ground makes it much worse.

So Jerk, how is auto x without PS? Is it a bitch?

mazdaspeed101 12-03-2002 06:30 AM

my t 2 came with the power steering removed

foopy 12-03-2002 07:19 AM

i had a s4 before and LOVED the no power steering. yea its a bitch to park, but once you get it moving, it turns fairly normally. but you just get such a feel for the road. im sure other non-power steering users can relate.

anyways. what i want to kno is if removing the belt from my s5, will mimic the non-powersteering of my previous s4.

comments? suggestions?

No it will not mimic your setup on the s4 by just removing the belt. With just the belt removed it will be harder to turn than your s4 was and take more effort. If you want to get something like your s4 had you're going to have to do some of the suggestions above.

foopy 12-03-2002 11:12 AM

ahhhhh. (crap)

guess i gotta use the wussy power steering for now. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

thanks all for the feed back :bigthumg:

Jerk_Racer 12-03-2002 11:59 AM

ILUV: AutoX isn't bad without it. Last year I had Advan A-032R's (225/50R16) up front. This was with a itty bitty 320mm diameter steering wheel and fighting the offline pump. It wasn't bad once I got used to it. Now I have no pump to fight and have less sticky 225's up front. It's easier now, but it wasn't that bad before. I just had to slightly alter the way I steer as well to get some leverage on the wheel when parking. Over 5mph it's all right.

Hear me now and listen to me later, girly-man. Do some pushups or something if it's a problem. :smirk:

i have a manual rack in the 20b, and its lighter than the first gen, its a one hand deal in parking lots

In my S4 i took the power steering off(removed the belt, pump and bracket.. then looped the inlet hose with the outlet hose so the gears in the rack dont get to hot and can still have fluild.. i would recamend keeping the power steering rack because of the quicker ratio so you wont have to turn it as many times.. even at a stand still its not hard to turn.. i palm mine all the time with no problems.. and i am a 17yr kid whos 5'9" so theres nothing special about me.. just my $.02 i prefere no power steering on a power rack opposed to a manual rack..

Dave

Oh ya... remember to pull the fuse too or you will get an anoying warning buzzer..

Turbo II 12-03-2002 05:35 PM

yes its the belt closest on the right side of the engine bay. it wasnt that bad when my belt snapped and i drove home from work without it on

norotor_nomotor 12-03-2002 09:20 PM

taking off the power steering seems like a bitch... how much is a manual rack???

rotary>piston 12-03-2002 10:10 PM

cut the belt and, magic, no power steering! It will be pretty hard to turn with the bad ratio. You should probably take out the pump too, it'll help save weight.

ChainSawOnSteroids 12-04-2002 12:57 PM

i have taken mine out, ****** easy, and even with the belt off, its easilyu turned, just some dont like to put any elbow grease itno it, its ok not hard
