What manifolds will i need to get to do this and where should i buy them? Id like to start buying some of the parts for my new vert project. :smirk:

Rob x-7 01-29-2003 05:08 PM

would be easier to swap in a TII motor and wiring harness. Then go to work on the drivetrain.

vosko 01-29-2003 05:10 PM

you can do it but i don't recommend it

Why not, Im going to be building a brand new motor for the turbo to go on i just need to know what things i need that im missing.

1Revvin7 01-29-2003 05:19 PM

high compression n/a motor, can't handle much boost, esp w/o a standalone ems.

I had planned on rebuilding with lower compression rotors and running a standalone https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rob x-7 01-29-2003 07:02 PM

buy a compleate j-spec and rebuild that.

Seppuku 01-29-2003 07:14 PM

Ive thought about that but i already have a spare na motor, guess ill just have to buy a jspec.

j9fd3s 01-29-2003 07:58 PM

basically what we are trying to say is that a t2 conversion ends up costing about the same as turboing the na

Just sell the spare and use that money for a j-spec.IF it runs good some people will pay good money for a good condition 13b.Then you can buy the j-spec and save for a rebuild kit.Just don't pull a vosko and start it and blow the coolant seals. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rotaryman88 01-29-2003 09:41 PM

Hey...I'll try to be a little more helpful for you, because we are planning on turboing an NA '91 coupe later on...and the payoff is better then what you'll get from a stock jspec swap...here's my 2 cents so far:

You'll need a stock turbo/manifold from an s5 or s4(go s5 though = better). Then buy a spacer manifold from racing beat(i think) that moves the turbo manifold out about an inch because the turbo manifold won't clear the NA lower intake manifold. You'll need to drill into the oilpan for a return. The rest of the plumbing is pretty much custom..you'll need a pipe to from the turbo to the TB, or IC depending on what your doing. The stock NA block can put up w/ a steady 6psi w/ good tuning. The better part of turboing an NA opposed to swapping the jspec is that you don't deal w/ the messy wiring harness swap and misc parts...turboing the NA will work w/ your existing harness, you'll just need to get larger T2 injectors and an S-AFC or similar...of course swapping to a T2 driveline will be a good idea too as the stock NA s5 tranny is normally only good for 250hp....so far this is all I've come up w/ for we do this project..it's really not that hard, and no you won't get AS much power as you probably would from the 4port motor...but hey..you'll be dif, lol...

Used turbo/manifold = $250 to $450

T2 tranny = $200

T2 driveshaft = $100

custom plumbing = $200(it'll be a lil creative)

bov = $50 to $250(depends on what you use)

misc parts/fittings = $100

so about $1300 to $1600 to turbo an NA w/ the tuning equip on a stock motor @ 6psi(NA compression) should be about 215rwhp provided you have free flowing exhaust, etc...

jspec swap = $1000 for the motor, $100 for tranny..etc...about the same price if you do the work yourself..but your only looking at maybe 190rwhp @ stock boost..

NOW DONT GO FLAMING ME...this is all my theory on it...and your alls may vary...but hey..he asked what he needed for an NA turbo kit, not what he should w/ his car...

hope i helped...

Racer X 01-29-2003 09:46 PM

You also forgot to mention he will need t2 tranny mounts as well.Just remember that anything past 6psi and kiss the apexs goodbye.

Rotaryman88 01-29-2003 10:12 PM

I don't remember what that aaroncake guy from back in the day was running on his NA motor..i'm pretty sure it was 5 or 6psi and the only thing that went wrong eventually was that his tranny gave out(stock s4 na tranny)...

but if your rebuilding the motor anyways..go 3mm seals and s4 t2 rotors, etc...you could boost more then...

Or use 84-85 SE rotors for a better response.I hear thats what alot of T2 owners use when building motors for thier car.I guess the compression is just about right.

Seppuku 01-29-2003 10:22 PM

ok thanks rotaryman, so i can use the stock ecu as long as i get a fuel controller, cool. I already knew i'd need a new tranny from a tII . Now i got to figure out how much this will cost and see how long it will take to do.

'79rx7 01-29-2003 10:26 PM

Don't forget the Turbo II fuel pump and injectors to back up all the air flow

rotary>piston 01-29-2003 10:27 PM

juat get a turbo engine, then instead of maxing at 6 psi, you can hit 10 or more relatively easily

Rotaryman88 01-30-2003 02:17 PM

But 10psi on a T2 engine vs 6psi on an NA engine won't be as much power....

j9fd3s 01-30-2003 02:23 PM

what about the timing? the na is gonna be really advanced because it doesnt retard under boost. you need to make a manifold spacer, its not an off the shelf thing. it might be less hassle to make a custom manifold and get a larger turbo (full to4). also if you swap to a turbo front cover that will give you the oil drain for the turbo. you also will have to make intercooler pipes, no off the shelf kits will fit.

Turbo II 01-30-2003 03:04 PM

it all depends how much work ya wanna put into it. u can do it the hard way like rotaryman and 1revvin7 or the easier way and buy a jspec. hey 1revving and rotaryman, ur still working on ur na projects right?

1Revvin7 01-30-2003 03:58 PM

On our T2 conversions yes. I plan on turboing an n/a motor in the future.

Turbo II 01-30-2003 04:01 PM

oh **** thats right, u did the TII conversion. who was doing an na?

j9fd3s 01-30-2003 04:57 PM

my buddy is going to turbo my ex 91, and thats turbo the na. it can be done but its not really the easy way

mike

Rotaryman88 01-30-2003 05:00 PM

Yes, I'm doing a T2 swap as well..but I already tried the Jspec route and it blew up in my face, literally! I too am planning on turboing a '91 NA in the future...(not my project though..but I'll be helping)

1Revvin7 01-30-2003 07:21 PM

yea its my buddy future Rx7, its gonne be juiced too, then when/if the motor blows, real T2 engine

1Revvin7 01-30-2003 07:21 PM

we have a lot of the same **** going on Rotaryman88 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rotaryman88 01-30-2003 07:37 PM

Your telling me, lol. Wanna know some weird ****...I had this dream the other night that I actually was buying your exhaust and I went to pick it up but I was driving a 1st gen rx7 and some how I got stuck in barn while backing up, lol...crazy stuff I tell ya...

I need to get a pressure sensor from a s5 t2!

what's the status on your conversion anyways ? havent seen any updates lately.

Rotaryman88 01-30-2003 08:11 PM

Who's his or mine??? Mine...I just posted some pics the other day..I have everything done but I need oil lines, a t2 pressure sensor(for safety), and some coolant, lol...nothing major really...its just been so damn cold lately...I'm also one of those people that likes to do stuff while the doin's good..so I'll probably wait to start the motor until i install an efan and some other lil goodies https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png I can wait...its cold..not to mention its been over a year, whats another 2/3 months, lol...

1revvin7, i saw your pics already rotaryman88 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

last I heard 1revvin7 had some tranny mount blues...

1Revvin7 01-30-2003 08:37 PM

well, its so damn cold here too, but i managed to get out there tonight. I need some custom fuel rails, Need to tap my some sensors into my block, wire in my starter and fix my tranny mount, and fill my radiator. My dads going to order the right taps I need tommorrow, gonna call him to get some extra wire for the starter too.Everything but the fuel rails should be done this weekend. If Rotaryman buys my exhaust, I can payoff my buddy the $$ i owe him(hes hounding me!) and start saving for my rails. Then I will be rdy to tune, but its winter so she ain't leaving the garage. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif I just threw some premix in the motor tonight, and tapped the water nipples on the block too; the ones that goto the TB, but the tb mod is done and its tapped and capped. Just need to buy some distilled water so i can fill the rad up, finally got all the right radiator hoses and heater core hose problem solved. I finally got around to drilling out the broken bolts on the tranny, and I had the "Y" section duped out of aluminum and i was gonna weld that to the tranny but i though naw. But after drilling the bolts out the holes won't exactly line up with the y section, so i have to bore the holes on the y section out and use some big washers on the bolts, then that BITCH will be done. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I just mainly need $$$, just blew couple hundred on new turbo gaskets and Royal purple syn premix/oil.

Rotaryman88 01-30-2003 09:05 PM

I need overnite to call me back to get my motor back so I can your exhaust, lol...

1Revvin7 01-31-2003 07:38 AM

ahah, friggin sweet. Man I got **** to do, gotta go out and get some boxes now. Already got the packing material, but damn that Y -pipe is huge. Gotta try UPS for shipping, since the post office is a rip-off.

Rotaryman88 01-31-2003 11:09 AM

Yea...if you find out the shipping costs, PM me...I still haven't heard back from overnite, I'll probably call them Sunday(if they're open) and make sure of a delivery time...it shouldn't take more then a week to get the motor back to Atkins, so my refund should be here by like Feb 13th I would hope!!!
