For whatever reason mazda decided that the tranny in the NA would be realllllyyy close to it's power handling limit. In short it seems that most cars with over 120k have tranny's that are starting to work at less then great levels.
Oddly enough they seemed to have done the same thing with the TII tranny which makes you wonder why the TII tranny isn't in the NA and some other tranny that's got some strength isn't in the TII. At any rate. So assume that you've got a tranny that's slowly dying, what's a good fix? How much hell is it to put a TII tranny into an NA? Anyone know of a good rebuilt tranny that won't die in 100k? What about this fabled Miata tranny conversion? Discuss. |
A TII tranny in a good state can transfer 500hp just fine. What more do you want?
|
Miate conversion is just closer ratio gears. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png NA trannies are fine, when you rebuild them use the MAZDA OEM Bearings.

I have a S4 TII tranny if you want one, otherwise I would get yours rebuilt and let it go another 100k+ miles

how do you tell the difference between a turbo and n/a tranny and s4 and s5's arent interchangeable are they? also whats the difference on the turbo and N/a clutch
|
What does it take to swap a TII Tranny into an NA?
Do you have to replace the diff? Flywheel? Clutch? What? |
you need...
flywheel driveshaft diff slave clutch and pp half shafts i think front counter weight i think thats it |

If going this route, this will elimintae the use of T2 halfshafts. BTW - I am using a NA slave on my T2 tranny. |
https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif The starter is also different in the TII. |
yes you need that as well
how are you using a n/a slave on a t2 tranny? the bolt pattern is totally different |
i have a n/a motor with the turbo2 drivetrain , i used the n/a master cylinder and the turbo slave cylinder hehe

what is all ionvalved wiht the miati conversion ????
the turbo II trannys have a ribbed case and the n/a is smooth |
hehe thanks! i figured it out too by looking at a few friends cars. but yeah damn clutch
|
the t2 bell housin is detatchable, the n/a bell housing goes 3/4 of the entire tranny
|
I think that putting a t2 trany in a n/a is kindof self defeating unless you have a ported motor. The gear ratios are different aren't they? SO unless you have the power, the gears would make you go slower than you were before. My trany has made it almost 200k and it still seems to be going strong.
NA tranny ratios: 3.475:1, 2.002:1, 1.366:1, 1.000:1, .0711:1 Turbo II tranny ratios: 3.483:1, 2.015:1, 1.391:1, 1.000:1, 0.762:1 Other than a shorter 5th gear, you won't notice the difference..... |
but you will notice that when you retire the car and attempt the 20b swap the t2 drivetrain wont be left in your drive way and the n/a which was orignally in your car would have
Ed's car is home: in my garage. Seems to spend a lot of time there https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Hey what do you have to do for the miata swap? Just out of curiosity I'm going to run this tranny till it's nothing but dust. |
How much money and how long would it take for a beginner to do a transmission rebuild. I know, i probably should not do it since i don't have a lot of experience but just in the case i do.
