I am surprized to find that there is no tranny rebuild in the FAQs.
I am going to the boneyard tomorrow with my pops to look at this 86' N/A that we are going to loot. I have heard that 86' was the worst year for trannys. My question is, if I can get it for 100 is it worth the money and time to rebuild it or should I just hold out for a TII tranny since I am targeting 200 RWHP? I have my new digital camera ready if I do decide to do a tranny rebuild I will post it. |
I've never seen a tranny rebuild faq in internet fc land either. Mine is getting noisy and hard to shift sometimes and I was wondering about this, too. Sometimes, rebuilt ones come up on Ebay for $400 plus shipping. I've read that the NA tranny can take 250 flywheel HP before it gets unhappy. My streetported, intake and exhaust equipped NA won't make that w/o nitrous or forced induction so if it were me, I'd just buy a couple old NA trannys, break them, and throw them away. They are cheap ($100 as you discovered). They are also easy to change compared to wrong wheel drive cars.

you dont see a tranny rebuilding FAQ because its usually not a job
for the do-it-yourselfer. most professional mechanics send transmissions to shops to get rebuilt, they dont get involved. you can get your tranny rebuilt locally for about $400-$600 if you give them the tranny and put it in yourself, and they will even give you a warranty with it. |
dude i have an 86 transmission and it has lasted me for a good 188,000 miles no grinding, no hard shifts, just perfect smoothness all day....i say go for it if you think the tranny that you are going to pull still works if it doesnt work dont even waste your time with it...just buy a JDM TII tranny off Ebay thats how i would do it! good luck

Well, since we are on the subject of transmissions i too have an 86' transmission. She has lasted me alittle more than 230,000 miles. Unfourtunatly while changing my oil over the weekend i discovered that my trans front main seals has sprung a leak, a major leak... fully contaminating my fairly new clutch...and pretty much F'ing up any plans i had for new years. I plan on having it rebuilt ASAP
What kind of trouble will i run into if say : i'm driving along and all traces of lubricating oil leave the transmission case while at 80mph or 3000 rpms I guess i'll be left with just a 4th gear eh'? Well, i suppose it's a good way to start the new year -Markus |
