I was playing with the transmission, and it feels like the car is going in reverse gear but not all the way. It feels like its right at the tip but not going in further into the gear slot.

Is there anything that could be restricting the reverse gear from getting into gear?

two things that may help:

push the clutch in and stick it in 1st then back in reverse

or

do a little clutch work as you move it to reverse

the S4 transmissions did not have syncromesh on the reverse gear (surprisingly the S5 DID).

this makes it hard sometimes to get into reverse, especially if you have been moving and there are parts of the transmission still spinning. what you need to do is make sure everything is stopped spinning first.

i like going into 5th gear first before reverse, but sometimes it's inevitable that it will grind.

of course some basic stuff that will help is get a fluid change if you haven't done one in a while. use some good full synthetic, like the stuff from Redline, and also try adding an additive. Lucas Oils sells one, called "transmission fix" and i have found it works quite well.

if you are saying you can't get it into reverse no matter what, then look into getting a replacement tranny.

buying a used NA tranny is not expensive at all...
