I have all oil leaks stopped, new fluids everywhere. This is 88 n/a with over 125,000 miles. When I first got the car running the auto tranny slipped. I thought it would get better as I drove it. This car was parked for over 2 years. And the tranny has gotton better, had it flushed and filled last weekend. Well I put a quart of Trans-X in last night and will give about a week before I get serious about taking to a shop. What would make a auto tranny slip, is the converter? It only slips when I am stopped at a light. When ease into the throttle, you can feel it catch and you can go on. Is this serious?

Thanks for the help.

could be the converter? clogged filter? maybe there isnt enough fluid in it? are the auto trannys like a drain and fill only or do they have a tranny fluid pan, gasket, filter etc. ? does it shift funny when you go around a corner?

j9fd3s 01-19-2003 11:00 PM

auto trannies are more complex than the enitre rest of the car, it could be a bunch of things making it slip

Too much in too small of a space. That's why I've never owned anything but 5-speeds. :bigthumg:

Geoffman72 01-20-2003 12:19 AM

Are you sure its not right? If the tranny didnt slip at the light you either couldnt stop or the car would stall.

Rob x-7 01-20-2003 04:33 PM

there are clutches in a automatic transmission that go bad, there are solenoids

that go bad, valve bodies can go bad when something else goes bad and causes

metal particles to be circulated thru the transmission. Usually heat and lack of fluid

changes causes tranny problems, the converter is part of a rebuild, but its pretty much

never the sole cause of a tranny problem.

My advice would have been not to change the fluid, but its too late for that.

Its only a matter of time before the slip gets worse, you can try taking your

chances but if it starts slipping bad enough and you try to get it home and run it

at constant high RPMs, you can run into other problems.

RX7Aggie 01-20-2003 05:18 PM

my auto tranny on my '86 NA went out, started slipping between 1st and 2nd. That cost $1500 for the rebuild (ouch!). What started it? who knows, but i do know that my stick in my '87 turbo is much easier to deal with.

just the other day, my car stalled out. why? clutch fluid leaked out cuzi i got a hole in my slave cylinder. how much for the part? $40 and i can do it myself. I dig the stick...

88Turbo 01-20-2003 10:01 PM

Yes, it slips going around a corner, but not all the time. And it is still getting better, now I can stop and it will stay engaged. It used to feel like it slipped out of gear, and the rpms would go up. It does still slip accelerating and around corners, but it seems to get better as it warms up. I know the car was abused by the previous owner, we will just have to wait and see.

Racer X 01-21-2003 01:34 AM

If it slips whe you got to take off from a stop then its most likely the old torwue converter init.I had a friend whos car did that before. It was like having a stall converter but not. :bigthumg:

Shane.Trammell 01-21-2003 10:34 AM

mine is all messed up. my auto that is. the guy from rx7world.com said that he rebuilds them and guarantees them for like $850. not including shipping. that would be like 60-100

loudazzrx7 01-21-2003 12:24 PM

If the thing has an internal problem all you did when you changed the fluid was make it worst.all ways happens.Brings out the problems.Check the valve body--they do get clogged with ****.

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 12:41 PM

all auto trannies go bad, we used to stock every one that mazda made

mike

Turbo II 01-21-2003 01:25 PM

j9fd3s 01-21-2003 01:29 PM

The mazda dealership here loves to do that every part i go to get from them they have to order.

88Turbo 01-22-2003 10:42 PM

Thanks for the info, it is starting to get worse by the day, I am taking it to one of the more reputable tranny shops on Friday, I just hope the guy will work on it. I will let you know if it will need to be

rebuilt, but if he has to pull it, why not go ahead and rebuild? Can these trannys take a shift kit, or would it help?

88Turbo 01-23-2003 11:54 PM

My mechanic wanted me to change the modulator valve first before we tore into it. That will be here Saturday.

88Turbo 01-26-2003 09:56 PM

Well the modulator is changed and now it wont even pull out of the driveway. WTF? The vacuum line is good all the way to the manifold, it does have vacuum. Where is the valve body? And how do I clean it? I know this is going to be something simple that I have overlooked. I could fall into a barrel of tits and come up sucking my thumb, that is how my luck runs!

Rob x-7 01-27-2003 05:53 PM

the valve body is the main part of the transmission when you take the

pan off, I would seek professional help from here.

Usually once a tranny goes bad and you try changing the oil or

changing little parts here and there is when its done for good.

j9fd3s 01-27-2003 06:17 PM

yup, its dead jim

88Turbo 01-27-2003 09:35 PM

Well I have some good news, I think. I did change the modulator valve, Oriellys, 22.95. I have two repair manuals and neither one mentions it. Anyway, I called mazda and asked about the part, 73.50, special order. I finally found out you have to adjust them when you install. I did not know this. So I did adjust tonight and it finally hooked up. I need to adjust a little more and it will be perfect. Man does it run! I am glad to say that I did this on my own, the guy I took it to told me that I will need a rebuild, 1500.00. I just hope it stays together. Thanks to everyone.

Rob x-7 01-28-2003 04:59 PM

cool, hope it works out for you!

One of the electic solenoids went on my Lexus tranny, and due to that

it fucked the valve body up, hopefully this isnt the case for you.

j9fd3s 01-28-2003 05:29 PM

yeah good luck, what happened to rab is far more common. i hope its not in this case

mike

Rob x-7 01-28-2003 06:05 PM

solenoid went bad, tranny ran hot, started coming apart

and small metal pieces ate away at the valve body. All the while

it ran great, lol.

pengaru 01-28-2003 06:48 PM

looked at a valve body once, looked at a torn apart 3 speed + overdrive auto transaxle once, decided all cars wil be manual from that point on.

Nothing mechanical I use on a daily basis should be so complex that it makes me dizzy when looked at.

88Turbo 01-29-2003 09:39 PM

Good news for sure! I took it to a tranny shop and to make a long story short, they put the proper amount of fluid in. I felt like an idiot!!!!!!! I just had it flushed and filled. This car has been slipping like this for the entire time I had it, and it was fluid. Well now I know you have to have the engine running to check fluid, I hate to admit that, but I have never heard of that in all the time that I have been driving and owned vehicles. Go ahead and cuss me, I deserve it for that kind of a bonehead play of the day, but my car is smooth as silk. I thank you all, I am glad I have your help.

sincere and damn happy,
