Curious,

I have to get a new or rebuilt tranny, my 2nd and 5th gear syncros are just fried. Way past the redline synthetic and rev matching. I need a tranny that can just shift.

I got a 13b N/A with holley set up. Maybe 180-190 horses. Is there an advantage to going to a TII tranny or a Miata tranny?

If so what are the mods I would have to do? Shorten axel or lengthen? Are the any of these trannies lighter or heavier than any of the others? And I'm assuming a miata tranny is probably very costly huh?

Thanks,

Craig

I'd get the Miata tranny unless you're planning on doing a TII swap ever. The 6-speed close ratio transmission would really help your acceleration.

The miata tranny handles as much power as a the na one so as long as you keep at a hp range that it can take itll be fine if not youll need the TII one. If you run your car that hard you may want to just get the tII one anyway.

You can buy a TII tranny for less than $100. So why not find one that works and just throw it in?

Haha!

Yeah? WHERE! And how many miles?

CGeek2k 04-12-2004 08:42 PM

Will the miata tranny bolt straight in to an s4?

ambassador_josh 04-12-2004 10:55 PM

Will the t2 tranny bolt to the s4 block? I'm sure there is a faq about it somewhere, if so, please point me in the right direction! Thanks

ambassador_josh 04-12-2004 10:56 PM

and are all miata trannies 6 spds?

Maybe in your world of "physics means nothing" you can get a TII tranny for $100, but here in a place I like to call the real world, you cant get a good one for less than $200.

On top of that, you dont just throw it in. You also need to "throw in" a TII flywheel, clutch kit, slave cylinder, starter, driveshaft, rear end, and halfshafts.

mazdaspeed7 04-12-2004 11:02 PM

I guess I can answer the main question. If youre only making 180-190 hp, you could get away with a S5 n/a tranny unless you drive like me. In which case, youll need a TII tranny. The Miata guts bolt into a n/a case, and uses the same clutch as the n/a, as well as the driveshaft. That tranny has been rumored to take about 300 hp, but I havent had a chance to try to break one yet.

There are two in my garage that both shift great that I paid less than $100 for. Is there something I missed here? Not to mention the one I gave to a friend and the other I traded for what I cant remember....so thats 4 that have found their way into my parts shed in the last two years.

Once you have the auto driveshaft, slave and the flywheel/pressureplate/clutch it takes about 2 hours to throw in. Even ghetto style on the ground. So I guess that I consider that Just throwing it in. On a lift I can do it in less than an hour so yeah throw it in. Its one of the easiest na mods there is.

You dont need to be a jerk just becuse I disagree with you. You take things way to personal. I know your just a young kid but really. grow up.

Just like your 50+ motor teardowns and you've seen that nothing is galvanized?

If you make it sound like it's all that easy I really wouldn't let you near my car with a wrench. I'd like to see you remove and install a new flywheel with basic hand tools. Actually I don't think generic wrench sets come with a 54mm?

I'd LOVE to see you do a TII tranny swap along with flywheel in less than an hour.

There's a difference between disagreeing and not knowing what you are talking about.

"Just like your 50+ motor teardowns and you've seen that nothing is galvanized?"

This is what I said.

"Also, not one of the 50+ engines where I have taken the hose off that nipple had a plated nipple."

I said plated......Galvinzed and plated metals have very different characteristics. I was referring to "gold cadmium plating" which I have never seen on that part untill I saw Penegru's new mazda plates.

Now that I am without air I use my 1 inch socket and breakerbar with a 4 foot extension. I welded up a brace that holds the engine in place and use the sst to hold the flywheel. It comes off with as much effort as you would put into a lugnut.

When your a mechanic that gets paid by the job and not by the hour you learn to work fast. Trannys are what we call gravy. Why....becuse a good mechanic gets it done quicker than the alloted time. Then you move on to the next job and beat the clock agian. I worked this way as a mechanic for 1 year and worked by the hour for 3 years before that. If you dont think I know how to wrench thats your loss. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

I bought a flawless t2 drivetrain for $250 with mounts and slave/shifter everything. And yes I took the transmission to reputable tranny shop and had it opened infront of me. Bigturbo74 got a t2 tranny for $100 also. It does happen. Gmon has atleast 10 motors apart in his basement currently. Gmon does have plenty experience, in some areas a lot more than me...
