alright i dont know if its normal or not but the tranny is getting super hot and as time progresses it fights going into gear...its like 5 times hotter than my heater??? (hard to describe) should the tranny be getting hot like this?

NotalesS 05-16-2007 03:23 PM

HOw hard is it to get into gears? Are you forcing it in?

Are you running the car hard? They got hot pretty easy just by abuse, or aggressive driving . Also the exhaust is right next to the tranny so the harder you fun, heat transfer to the tranny too.

donhayes 05-16-2007 08:31 PM

My tends to get very hot in the summer or if I've been driving it for a while. But I need a new tranny soon so that might be your problem.

whorider 05-16-2007 09:55 PM

Yeah mine gets hot when driving hard for more than 30 minutes. I was thinking it was the exhaust causing this. Today I noticed the shifter was REALLY HOT! No problems with shifting just really hot. Normal? any help would be great.

shpaintball 05-19-2007 07:17 PM

so i took it to my mechanic... he says its b/c of the exhaust so close however it will damage the tranny if you use crappy fluids *non synthetic so i put synthetic in it and it cleaned up a bit ...no hard shifts i would never force it ...its just a little rough....not anymore tho...so use good synthectic...and exhaust wrap may help ...thanks guys https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

If you plan on racing your car make sure that you give it plenty of time to cool off before you race it because the heat will reduce your power through the trany. It killed my 1/4 mile times the one time I went to the track. That thing was rediculus hot and I run royal purple

Leetheslacker 05-21-2007 04:24 PM

my **** gets hot

i dont have the tranny heatshields anymore

im not really worried about it.

shpaintball 05-21-2007 08:32 PM

yea yea ...i just didnt want anything bad to be happening and now its all good i guess thats sorta a design flaw

whorider 05-21-2007 10:02 PM

Anybody ever use muffler wrap like the stuff sold for motorcycle pipes? That stuff insulates noise and temp. I have been thinking about using it and fabbing some heat sheilds.

donhayes 05-23-2007 10:57 AM

I used header wrap when I made my headers. That seems to really keep the heat down under the engine bay more than the stock shield did. So if you were to wrap your down pipe it would work except that stuff is expensive for a long roll.

Leetheslacker 05-23-2007 01:54 PM

wrapping **** also makes it rust out faster.

had to fix a hole on my dads e21 header a few times, the wrap would jsut trap it in and rust it out.

rowtareh 05-23-2007 07:40 PM

also gotta figure that you have really no heat reduction around the shifter area. and the metal is what, probably no more than 1/4" thick?

teknics 05-23-2007 10:01 PM

yea the shifter/trans area is always toasty.

best bet is to make some better heat shields, exhaust wrap is so-so solution.

chances are your rubber boot around the shifter is ripped too (under the plastic and leather surround) believe it or not that helps block a decent amount of heat, without that its like a portal to a furnace.
