Just wondering how accurate the timing pointer is on the front cover of a S5 n/a. The reason I ask is that when I time my car correctly, I get bucking under light acceleration and a wierd sounding idle. If I advance the timing about a eighth to a quarter of an inch, this problem goes away and my car behaves much better, but I am worried about pinging the engine. Just wondering if there is any way to check this.

Thanks!

the pointers are accurate, someone may have at one time

put the crank angle sensor in a tiny bit off, or it could

be something else causing the bucking

just leave it where it runs right

The pulley can be off by 1 deg, there is play in the bolts that hold it together. The cas can be off by 3 degs. A little advance on an n/a is ok.

cool.. I guess as long as it doesn't ping, it is ok. Is there any gains from advancing the timing on an n/a?? If so, how far can you go? Thanks for the help guys!!

yes you do gain from advancing the timing on an na. generally you can keep going until you loose power or start to ping

good luck getting your car to ping with an all stock fuel system , i can run mine almost full lean on the rich lean adjustment and my timing almost all the way advanced, i can get it to hesitate top end but not to ping.

sounds like a miss adjusted tps

that rich lean adjuster only adjusts idle, when the tps moves from 0 that thing doesnt work anymore

Ok, so this might be a dumb question, but if I advance it until it pings, won't I break an apex?? The TPS was off a little, but by advancing the timing over stock, lets say about 1/4" (3-5 degrees??) the hesitation goes away and the car doesnt buck at all. Something else that is wierd, I am getting about 28-30 mpg on a large SP with headers and an intake on a 91 engine. AND it is fast.. go figure https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

the sp is prolly causing the bucking, s5 efi doesnt like mods

pinging on an na wont break the seals right away
