I bought an '87 TII with a rebuilt motor, hks t04e, rebuilt tranny, new centerforce clutch and several other goodies to drop into my '88 TII. The '87 has been in an accident where it was rolled several times. When i pulled the engine/turbo/tranny I noticed the turbo was seized. The exhaust side is fairly rusted, blade and housing. Is anyone using the hks sport turbo upgrade, and have you rebuilt or upgraded the internals? Also, is there anyway to determine the condition of the engine while it is out of the car? The only thing that appears to be damaged is a cracked water neck. Does anyone have suggestions on what should be replaced/checked before the install into my car? The '88 TII I drive now runs great, and I would rather be safe than sorry. Also, if anyone needs anything from an '87 TII, just let me know. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

You can do a compression test to check the internals on the motor..

the good thing about the hks turbos is that they are normal garretts, so reuilds arent hard or expensive

First, I have done compression tests on rotaries in the car before, but it should be different when it is not right? Normally the starter cranks around 200-250 RPM and you hold the throttle open to get your numbers. If I hand crank it, it should be different, right? It will be cold, too. Does that make a difference?

Second, I don't know a whole lot about turbos. While I'm rebuilding the T04E, could I use different parts to upgrade the turbo. I have heard this turbo is not much more powerful than the stock.

turbo should be quite a bit bigger than stock

you can do a comp test but you gotta hookup the bell housing and starter to crank it. just pull the plugs and spin it by hand see if you hear loud even whooshes

Thanks!

I guess the compression sounds good. There were six fairly even swooshes. As for the turbo, it is bigger than the stock. I have read that it is much more efficient, but not that much more powerful. Has anyone ever upgraded or rebuilt one of these TO4E's? I know the turbo is the same as one from a Volvo, and so I can get a direct rebuild. I am wondering if anyone has ever improved this turbo with different internals or knows enough about turbos to recommend different internals. Once again, thanks everyone for any advice you have to offer.
