I was wondering if there was any kind of diagnostic port on 2nd gen rx7s. If there is, is there any software out there that you can put in a laptop and hook up to the car?

there is a thing that snap on makes that you can hook up to your car and it will tell you whats wrong and the likely way to fix it. you get your vin num., hook it to a phone line, and then it downloads the info from somewhere. then you hook it up to your car and it tells you the stuff. its really cool, but i dont know how much they cost.

you can also ground out your ecu thing thats in the front by the battery and it will tell you the trouble codes that the ecu is getting. more info on fc3s.org

the scanner? they are like $4-5000? the stock ecu outputs serial data but nobody has bothered to make something to interpret it

There is a guy somewhere that's figured out how to do it but I'm sure it's all custom. I've seen a couple of his graphs on the RX7club forum. He can watch his duty cycles and everything else. Pretty cool.

Of course there's a diagnostic port. It's called "checking the ECU error codes and then refer to the factory workshop manual."

That's the easiest way to run diagnostics on the FC. The S5 is simple, just ground the green one pin test connector up by the leading coil. Then turn the key to the ON position. The check engine light will illuminate and then go out. Then it begins to flash the codes. A long flash is a "10", a short flash is a "1". It will flash any stored codes and then begin to repeat itself. To clear the codes, either disconnect the negative battery cable or pull the BTN fuse.

S4s are similar, but I don't know offhand. Someone can give a link if you have an S4.
