I went to pick-up up the car yesterday, and once the new AFM was installed the car started throwing codes for days. Split air valve, high and low tps sensors, etc. We worked out most of the bugs, the car was actually running much better until...

I was blessed with the 3800 stumble, strange that it kind of "happened" out of nowhere, guess that's what I get for painting/coating the crap out of everything.

With the wideband hooked we went for several runs after minor adjustments with no tuning in the afc and at WOT it wouldn't even spit out and AFR it just said TOO RICH, after the stumble it would run nice to about 6K and then almost fall flat on it's face. Would the grounding issues involved with the stumble also be a cause of the too rich situation nearing and past 6k? Or am I overlooking something else?

Check grounds,

also verify that you are getting a consistant fuel pressure. Sounds like you are running way too rich tho, pull out fuel and see what happens.

Picked up some silver soldered ground straps to add in the e-bay, removed the battery harness and found some questionable wiring..looks like a good portion of the wiring will be replaced as the power lead to the alternator was fused to the post, the surrounding plastic was melted around the top of the cable end as well and the wire was as hard as a rock down about 4 to 5 inches from the end. The battery mount contacts are loose too, I know I didn't overlook them when I put the car back together...

I would say there were Major grounding issues, I am surprised that there wasn't more damage as a result, the other harnesses check out ok both from visual inspection and continuity tests.

Fuel system checks out good too, i'll see what happens when I get done repairing the battery harness and grounding everything down.

dont set anything in the afc until the ecu is happy. once you get all the codes gone then start tuning it.

you have all the solenoids? emissions?

Gotcha on the first one, tuning was left out of the afc. I'm just about ready to light it off again and see if the grounding and harness work has helped at all.

To the second, yes and yes. There were no codes left pertaining to the emissions goodies, took care of those before I ripped the power harness out of the car, hopefully they will not return once it put back together.

What were the questions about the emissions and solenoids about? tuning issues later?

some of the solenoids (the fuel pressure regulator) affect the fueling of the car, the ecu needs to see them plugged in

ok. I think I'm good there too, but i'll give it another look to be safe.

Contunity test showed a problem in the engine harness, tracking that down now, yay, fun.

89 Rag 09-04-2005 10:50 PM

WOO hOO!

After fixing the broken wire in the engine harness, and grounding the crap out of everything, the ecu is happy! No more codes and the car runs great! finally!

Nice pull all the way to the buzzer and beyond!

Now I get to play with the afc and dial it in! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

Thanks for the extra pointers guys!

So stoked!
