what is it that I need to set? I didn't even remove the tps, but do I need to set it anyway? could it be my idle? When I got to work, it actually barely stayed running, at like 300 rpm.

I did the tb mod and added pineapple inserts. I have yet to be sure my secondary ports are opening. Can I grease the actuators? I cleaned everything out, but wasn't sure if it would mess them up to grease them.

pengaru 03-03-2003 09:58 AM

the grease trick is pretty safe to use for checking if they move under load...

I would go through everything, set the initial set coupler, calibrate the tps, set idle, and check/adjust timing.

the tps can be a bit touchy to adjust right, you want it right on the threshold of idle, so when you start pressing the throttle pedal the smallest amount it should get off idle position. With the lights hooked up you want it barely adjusted to set the single light... make it so if you touch the linkage the slightest bit, it, comes off the idle position in the tps... this was the cause of my bucking often but my tps was going bad also, and the throttle bushings were a bit worn so there was some play making it inconsistent. I've noticed if it's adjusted too far into the idle area of the tps it will buck / hesitate around that spot on/off the gas, a very small section of throttle movement that will do it, and it seems to be the abrupt increase in airflow from pressing the gas while the ecu still thinks the throttle is closed, even though the AFM should be showing the airflow immediately.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, 80's engine management is a direct result of 60's drug use.

also recheck for vacuum leaks.

I think it's a vacuum leak

Yesterday it ran fine, and I think a hose must've popped off. Took the car out at lunch for more test driving, and evidently one of the coolant caps I used where the tb coolant hose used to be popped off, and sprayed coolant everywhere; white billowing steam. I got a ride from a coworker, and plan on going to pep boys (on one of my work routes) and getting some coolant and a new cap (with clamp or glue this time).

Also, where does the cruise control vacuum hose connect? I think it came off.

There are 2 vacuum nipples on the UIM, near the LIM. There is one on closest to the firewall, that is capped off, and one that is closest to the front of the car. This nipple has nothing on it, and I'm wondering what goes here.

My other option is the vacuum nipple facing the firewall on the side of the UIM. There is a group of 3, 2 of which are capped off (one of those points upward). The middle one is missing a hose.

Of these 2 spots for hoses, the cruise control goes on one (I'm guessing), but what goes on the other?

banzaitoyota 03-03-2003 11:14 AM

good job

if you cant find any better caps, you can get bolts that tightly fit the hose and clamp them in there.

you shouldn't have any open nipples at all (indecent exposure?), i dont know where the cruise control plugs into, off the top, i usually rip that out.

Baldy 03-03-2003 11:26 AM

but I have 2 places where it looks like hoses should be, but can only find one unconnected hose (cruise control)...my cruise doesn't even work (I don't really care) but I figure I should at least have the hose in the right place until I remove it. I guess I'll see if I can find a vacuum diagram on fc3s.org

yah thats your best bet, the other way to do it is to run the vacuum line and see where it wants to go, it may only reach one nipple

mike

Baldy 03-03-2003 11:34 AM

it actually reached both https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

I think the cruise control hose might go on the one on the side, closest to the firewall, just becuase the cable and hose where clamped together, and the cable goes behind the tb, so the hose kinda follows it (just logical guesstimating)

more descriptive: where the subzero starting thing bolts to the UIM, there's a vacuum spot right there, which is blank (another way of saying it: it's between the 1st and 2nd intake tube, counting from the front of the car)...this is the one that worries me, because I see no loose hoses anywhere, and I'm sure it's the cause of the stalling out

and when it's idling with my foot on the pedal, it has a lot of pop sounds (consistant with vacuum leak?)

pengaru 03-03-2003 11:37 AM

vacuum leaks suck

go with that one, mazda is subtle sometimes but usually there is only one way something will fit

mike

Baldy 03-03-2003 11:41 AM

can't find it on factory service manual...anyone have any idea what hose goes to that spot on the intake manifold?

FCmaniac 03-03-2003 12:29 PM

maybe nothing.... what all did you remove again for all this? I thought you took a lot of emissions **** out...

Baldy 03-03-2003 01:55 PM

I actually left the emissions stuff in

I took off both manifolds, replaced brittel vacuum and fuel hoses, eliminated the secondary butterflies, added pineapple inserts to my secondary port sleeves, and pretty much cleaned out all the intake parts

I went ahead and capped that vacuum fitting, and it idles now. I also added another cap over the coolant fittings, but couldn't get a clamp over it (in a hurry). So I figured, if the last one stayed on for 2 days, this one would stay on until I can make it home (I hope...jug of antifreeze in car just in case).

Baldy 03-03-2003 02:00 PM

by the way, I don't know which aspect of the cleanup/upgrade that it was, but the engine sounds really cool, especially at higher rpm's...very meaty

cool, it sounds like you did good https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Baldy 03-03-2003 02:18 PM

now I just need to install my header....I'm hoping it'll be easy compared to this other crap

j9fd3s 03-03-2003 02:43 PM

yah, you dont have to take anything else off

mike

Baldy 03-03-2003 03:41 PM

oh, another thing I just noticed today: there is some kind of ground that goes to the exhaust manifold (I think I am remebering this correctly)...I noticed the wire is just cut off and hanging there...any idea where this goes?

back by the driver side muffler? I have no idea where that goes either....

moxeysrx7@aol.com 03-03-2003 03:50 PM

what is the initial set coupler? is there on on the T2? i thought the only things to set were the idle (using the little set screw on the firewall side of the TB) and the TPS?

actually it's on the passenger side, right up by the motor

i think they one you mean goes from the tranny to the firewall

mike

Apex13B 03-03-2003 06:50 PM

if that ground is the same in an s5 i can just post i pic for you baldy....PM me

there should be a little spade terminal on the firewall

Baldy 03-04-2003 11:51 AM

ok, I'll check it out.

pengaru 03-04-2003 11:55 AM

clip protruding from behind wiper motor tail end

thats the one you're looking for if I'm not mistaken, theres a wire off the dynamic chamber that goes to it.

Baldy 03-04-2003 12:02 PM

I'll check it out. Thanks.
