Sounds like your sunroof is messed up.My friends GXL lifts then slides back.Makes a great second spoiler. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

damnit I thought so... it is a base model but I dont think that should matter....does anyone have any helpful ideas on troubleshooting!!!!
|
That's a pretty common problem they usally become semi-automatic sunroofs with age, try to manually open it back while holding the open button
or lubricate the screw looking things and the track when the roof is lifted up |
My sunroof does that too. It open about half way and then it starts clicking and gets stuck. I have to push it while pushing the button to get it to close right. Also I have to give it a little push for it to lift up. I think that it just fall oss the track but im not sure. I got a quote on fixing it and the place I went to wanted $400 to fix it. I was like no way Ill keep my money and my broke sunroof.

When I first got my base '89, the sunroof needed lots of help to move. I tried using that crank that comes with the car, but then it never moved at all. It actually got stuck open, and I had to throw a tarp over it. I bought an entire used sunroof assembly off e-bay for like $200 (can't remember exactly) and got someone to repair it for like $300. That sucked, but it has worked since, and doesn't ever need help. They told me all the cable were messed up.
I know you can find just the motors on e-bay for like $20, if you think that's the problem. And if you feel like taking it apart, I doubt the cable would be that hard to replace. |
When you try to open the sunroof just tap on the button when it gets stuck. Keep tapping on it and it should open. Mine has that problem too. Close it and try again if it doesn't work. Just give the button little taps and it should open.

clean the rails thoroughly. Get them nice and spotless and then lubricate them heavily with silicon spray. That made a big differenct in the yellow car.

well I cleaned the track and it does open up alittle more but for some reason it seems like the motor runs out and stops.. I tryed to force it but nothin'... the damn motor just seems like it stops!!!!!!! WTF.... is disasembly relatively simple... damn hayes doesnt even metion it....
|
mine had rust particles in the track and would jam it up and not let it close. I cleande it up with a large magnet (or in my case a 12" blown MTX SuB) then got some valvoline grease and some 20-50 oil and viola it only needs a little tap to open and goes back and closes perfect.

BTW:The haynes manual doubles a good paper wieght on most thing like this.I should know.I have one for the FC engine I have and the FB I have. |
after seeing what the entire assembly looked like out of the car, it didn't look to be that difficult
I think you have to remove the headliner to access some bolts, and there are some along the outside of the tracks someone let me know if I'm wrong |
ok well I tryed the tapping trick( thanks don) and well now I can see out the front about an inch so progress I guess ... BTW whats the best/ easiest way to clean the tracks... granted mine is very limited/ a pain to get to.... Thanks again everyone !!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif

i was playing around with mine b/c it gets stuck right when it starts to slide backwards and forwards. I used some brake cleaner and then followed with some silicone spray and... IT WORK PERFECT!!!
But then like an hour later it was back to the way it was. So I think I'm gonna take it out this weekend adn clean it out spic and span. At least I know it'll work. |
