Well first off i spent a little over 6 grand restoreing a 90 convertable rx7 to original condition...the only difference though is a new memphis sound system. I get complimented on looks alot because the paintjob turned out great....but power is a different story...the engine is original with 130k miles and the transmission is an automatic which sometimes stops working in reverce....i would like some advice on the cheapest route i could take to atleast geat this car competeing with the camaros mustangs and firebirds at my school...also..about how much life is left in my engine..ive heard rumors that an rx-7 engine non turbo has a life of 100k-150k miles... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

j9fd3s 12-19-2002 03:57 PM

i think your tranny is gonna die first. how far are you willing to go?

mike

StillInHighSchool 12-19-2002 03:57 PM

i just noticed that some other guy has had the same problem......there are no turbo's in the area..in fact i think that i have the only rx-7 around....and i put so much heart in it....i just dont want to sell it for less then what i put into it

StillInHighSchool 12-19-2002 03:58 PM

i realy dont care....

j9fd3s 12-19-2002 03:59 PM

how far are you willing to go to keep up with the v8 guys? engine and tranny swap?

mike

StillInHighSchool 12-19-2002 03:59 PM

the thing is i was given 6 grand..and i spent it all on getting the thing to run and to run good..it also has redone interior and a dentless body....i just want something that can run with a z28 or a mustang.....shift kits maybe?

StillInHighSchool 12-19-2002 04:00 PM

supposedly thats all the options i get......

StillInHighSchool 12-19-2002 04:02 PM

my dad is battleing cancer and i myself have a partime job at a local resteraunt....so money is hard to come by

The Blue Bomber 12-19-2002 04:03 PM

the engine life depends on how the engine was treated (i.e. good = long life) my engine has 160k and i deliver pizzas 4 days a week. (91 N/A) as for more power most people will say do a turbo swap. this is costly and time consuming but probably well worth it. how fast you want to go depends on how much you want to spend. a good way for some quick power, though, is a less restrictive exhaust and a better air filter or intake. also you might want to upgrade to some turbo drivetrain parts. good luck https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

Red88 12-19-2002 05:12 PM

u are better of selling it and buy a turbo 2

j9fd3s 12-19-2002 05:13 PM

i have 150k on my na motor and it see's 9k rpms on a regular basis

If you just wanna keep up with the normal v8s, you're all right. But you're gonna need every mod you can get since ur vert is heavy. Get some headers and full exhaust, RacingBeat.com sells nice exhaust, it would be cheapest to buy their header and have a shop near u make up the rest of it. Rx7.com sells underdrive pulleys and intakes, Get an eletric fan and lose atleast the A/C if not P/S. Lose all the emissions stuff and to the TB-mod, found in the FAQ section up top. Lose all the dead weight, spar tire etc, your probably gonna need some nitrous, because of the weight issue, you wouldn't need more than a 50-shot, which any motor can handle w/o hurting it. Then u should be all good, gonna cost around 1000-1500.

I hate to say it, but if money is that hard to come by, enjoy the car in its stock form, it will treat you right. and last a long time.

Start modifying a tired powertrain and you will be breaking things, broken things mean more money on top of the money to modify.

Apex13B 12-19-2002 07:02 PM

just try to have those mustangs and camaros keep up with you on an exit ramp...or on a twisting back road..that is where any RX7 really comes to life..you can get a fresh motor from pineapple racing or revolution rotary for about 1600-2000..that will help with your power issue. Ported motors cost about $2400...

all in all....pimp that vert..you dont need power..the ladies dont care about that **** https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png its just the looks (or when ppl ask you "what car is that?"

yeah it does matter how tired the motor is, you should do a compression test, my n/a motor w/ 151xxx miles on it had 125psi on both rotors https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR so old doesn't necessarily mean tired.

nymrod 12-20-2002 09:18 AM

A window sticker and 8" exhaust tip is worth ATLEAST 75hp. But seriously, you probably won't find many better looking vert's than an rx7 so unless you REALLY want to beat some idiot in a Z28 don't worry about it. Do the basic maintainence stuff and keep it running clean. When i'm done with my vert i'll let you know if I still lose to mustangs.. also, driving skill can be all the difference you need in winning a statistically impossible race.

StillInHighSchool 12-20-2002 02:18 PM

Thnx for the advice..maybe i should just work on looks...i still have a couple of questions...like is their any kind of shift kits available?......and wheres the best place to get a body kit?? if any one has any information on one in particular used by richard guzman....that would be helpful....thnx again for the advice

1Revvin7 12-20-2002 03:56 PM

do u mean shortshifters? Mazdatrix sells one, check the other vendors too, Bodykits hmmm... you gonna have to search around for the best price and I'm pretty sure rx7trix.com will beat any publicized price.

If there ever was a time you CAN dig yourself in a hole thats high school, too young to be going out anywhere that costs money, too young to have to pay rent/mortgage, no other debts whatsoever.

Spend the money on your cars now instead of greedy imature girls who want jewlery and ****.

Do it NOW while you can, lol

pengaru 12-20-2002 07:32 PM

do it now, do it later, never stop... ignore the women who are after money, find the ones that appreciate the speed https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Agreed, except its find one that appreciates and respects something that you like and have a passion for.

My GF goes went with me to the RX-7 things, not because she likes it, but because she knows I enjoy it. Same for the car shows and **** like that.

If you are with a woman who doesnt respect your interests, MOVE ON and find one that does because usually it means they are over-all a selfish person.

pengaru 12-20-2002 08:01 PM

heh

I don't really have problems with selfish people, I think people should always put themselves first for the most part... I wouldnt want my wife to go to an rx-7 owners gathering or linux users group meeting unless she was interested in it... otherwise she should go do something she likes, doesnt make sense to me to bring her to something she's gonna be bored with and suffer.

The guy with that vert lives in Guam

Its a bit much, the wing got to go, I dont care for the rims, he emailed me a while back asking me about my rims so maybe he changed them by now?

StillInHighSchool 12-21-2002 06:50 PM

well still i like the kit...the wing i agree with you one and i probly would change the weels..but i do still like the body..and thats what i wouldnt mind getting...now that i decided it would be too expensive to power up my rx-7

Apex13B 12-21-2002 06:58 PM

new ported motors still cost less than a chevy crate motor
