Finally got the engine back in the car, and now I can't get it to turn over. Starter just clicks when I turn the key. Smokes if i try it for too long. I pulled the starter out of the car and tested it, it seemed fine (the gear extended and turned). I can also turn the engine over by hand, so I know its not stuck. Any Ideas?

How good is your battery? I killed my Optima battery trying to unflood my car. Had to go buy a Die Hard.
It does the same thing when I jump start it from another car, so I'm assuming its not the battery.
hmm thats wierd, are you sure all the wires are hooked up to the right place? sometimes you need to cycle the key quickly

smokes huh? does it pop start?
What about the engine ground or things like that?
I'm certain all the wires on the starter are connected correctly, not so certain about the rest of the car. The starter is connected directly to the battery, so why would the engine ground matter? As far as I can tell, the negative terminal on the starter is grounded to the tranny anyway. Dont really want to roll start it since its the first time I'm starting the engine after the rebuild.

yeah thats really odd cause theres only 2 wires....

Wierd.. well you got me stumped..
solenoid?
i dont think it has anything to do with the starter

incendui -- I don't know much about this but the Haynes manual says that the overrunning clutch in the starter motor could be slipping. (Starter motor will turn, which you say it does and will look normal but the engine won't crank). They say that the starter motor must be replaced.
This is just a wild stab at the problem. |
You're probably right, I should just replace the starter. It just bothered me because it was working fine before I took the engine out. The only other thing I can think of is the gear might not be lining up with the flywheel right, but considering theres only one way to put it in, I dont see how it could be wrong. Funny how these things alway come up when you think everythings finished https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
