I've had both my battery and starter replaced and was wondering if this sounds correct for an RX7 trying to start. Sorry about the sound quality...

Every once in a while I get a slight studder and a small cloud of smoke from the exhaust, but usually it just sounds like the above clip. Plugs new, wires tested good, coils tested good, crank angle sensor tested good, ECU is getting 12.4V, and I know fuel is making it to the chamber. Where should I look to next? Anyone in the Charlotte area that could help? Thanks.

what about a compression test?

kb2727 03-25-2007 08:01 PM

I know it has some compression, due to listening to it crank with the plugs out. They were even pulses. As for exact numbers, I still need to get them. Supposedly, this car was drive daily about 2 months ago, though I bought it non-starting with hopes to fix it.

either the car is compleatly flooded out or there is no compression in that motor, should sound like a whamp whamp whamp not whhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa like yours. i sugjest pulling the plugs, crankin the car over for a bit to clear out the housings put the plugs back in and retry. also if you take an open vacum port put a hose on it and the other end into a bottle of atf that might help aswell.

i was gonna mention something about how it sounded... it didnt sound right to me either...

i also agree with trying to unflood it...

and granted that it may have compression, but according to the FSM, if the compression is low enough youll have starting troubles...

not to mention the rpm inwich the engine is being cranked over. this might sound ****** stupid but i knoticed this is an s5, here is a last ditch trick, have a freind push in the MAF cone all the way in while you crank it over then floor the car. trust me on this one we have to do it to the s5 race car when its cold every time or it floods out, once its warm though its ok and will fire on its own. i still to this day cannot figure it out as we changed MAF and other sensors many times , guess its just that cold blooded of a bitch.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking it sounded right from listening to some clips online. I've tried the "unflooding" procedures that are listed all over online with no success. I'm hoping to get some compression numbers tonight if I get the chance. I'll also look at the MAF. Thanks.

when all else fails, get somebody to pull/push start you. sometimes the starter just isnt enough. Ive started a couple cars this way when they had bad seals and the starter just wouldnt do it. (it doesnt make them run any better- and the white smoke is amazing, but at least you can get it running to help diagnose your problem)

wow mine sounds like that too but recently for me what happened is i was getting on an exit ramp and going about 40 and put it into second and let out the clutch and gave it some gas... so then the car slowly revved up like was lagging and died right there. i dunno if its flooded or not but it has only 68000 miles on it GTUs btw.
