Still Can't Get It Right
#1
Hello
I have an 86 RX7, 5 spd, 160,000 miles. It has been parked for about three and a half years because I was having trouble with the engine running properly. I would like to start driving it again but still don’t know what’s causing my problems.
I put new gas in the tank and new plugs in the engine; it started right up and seemed to run fairly good. I haven’t driven it down a road or highway yet but up and down a fairly long driveway. Then it happened just like before, it would hardly pull it’s self down the drive. When I tried to rev the engine it will pop and crack and try to die, if I back off the throttle a little it keeps it from stalling. I can ease the throttle up and the rpm will go up some, but if I try to give a little more gas it spits and sputters and will try to die. Also if you try to hold the throttle steady at most rpm’s the rpm’s go up and down by it’s self. It also seemed to flood and I had to pull it to start it
All that said I went out this morning and started it up and now it seems to run fairly well again. This is what was happing when I parked it three and a half years ago. It would run fine for a while and then it wouldn’t. It seems a little like a vacuum leak but I don’t know. I hope someone has an idea what might solve the problem.
Thanks

Sounds like a fuel problem... seriously clogged filter, bad ground on the pump, partial blockage in one of the lines... something like that thats causing inconsistant fuel delivery and restricting it at higher flow rates

After this much time, you're going to have to check just about everything.
Start with the easy stuff:
How do the plugs look?
Are the harness connector pins clean & seated?
Any old, brittle, cracked hoses?

Thanks for the reply’s:
I’ll start looking tomorrow at the things you’ve suggested. I know it’s been a while since I drove the car in fact I was surprised how well it started up after setting so long. It had been started a few times but very few. This is exactly what it was doing when I parked it.
When it starts ruining like this it doesn’t like you to give it gas at any rpm actually you can ease the rpm’s up but you have to do it slowly. And the other day when it was running so badly the gas gauge quit on me just before I parked it for the night, the hand dropped real slowly. The next morning it started and seemed to run ok but I think the gauge still wasn’t working.
The plugs are new but I even switched back to the old ones once out of desperation. I know this isn’t much more if any info, so I’ll look at it again tomorrow.
By the way I was curious about the gas pump, I pulled the carpet and the cover up from over the pump the other day and couldn’t hear the pump run, is this normal I had an 83 RX7 and you could hear it click a block away.
Hey thanks again!
