My brother's steering wheel starts to shake a little bit in 4th gear at around 70, but once he goes into 5th it gets pretty violent, and the shifter also shakes. I checked out the whole front end and everything seems ok. Any ideas?

I couldn't find anything while looking at it, but I had to rush because he had to leave. I was thinking maybe something loose in the subframe, but I'll need more time than the 5 minutes he gave me.

I guy I work with had a simular problem. Took his car to 2 repair places. They both put it on the lift and checked it out. One gave him a quote for over $600 of front end repair (tie rod ends etc...) It turns out, his lug nuts were so loose a couple had fallen off and his wheel was about to fall off.

I know it seems trival, but check those lug nuts.

Yeah, that was the first thing I checked.

Maybe it's just a bad alignment?

The alignment looks pretty good to me. I know I'm not as good as a machine, but I have a good eye for it. It's possible that his front tires need to be balanced again.

Yup. Sounds like the thing to me. They can seem fine up to about 60 or so, and then really get to shakin'.

I told him to try to go faster. Maybe it will go away above 100. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

mine has the same problem too, i dont know what it is? alighnment? balancing, bushings? lugs are good though.lol, could be the wheel bearings too? i dont have any money until i get my income tax back,i want it!!!!!!!

Definetly check wheel balancing. He could have thrown a weight. When my balancing was off, it wouldn't shake till over 50mph.

wouldn't let me edit so I just wanted to say that we see that same problem all the time at my shop and 9 times out of 10 it is a balance problem and nothing major

Yeah, he had that problem once before...on his way home from getting 4 new tires. :o I noticed that he curbed one of the rims I got for him. So he's probably hit a few potholes as well.

I once had a split a belt in a 2 month old tire. Check the balance, also- did he get any of his tires patched or plugged? Because that also can split a belt, when you looked at the tire, the tread went out of wack in this one area.

I'll have to check out his car again one of these days. I had to scold him for going 70 mph. That's above the speed limit.

cant it also be the Drive shaft? one of the universal joints on the GXL's shaft busted and was making the tranny vibrate. then again you are saying its more in the front....but if the tranny is vibrating check that and the tranny mounts....try the stuff the other peeps here said.

Yeah, I was thinking the u-joints, but he has all of the heat shields, etc. I didn't feel like taking them off to check.

Your brother should just give the car to me, you should protect your brother from vibrations that could cause some sort of nerve damage. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png

It's funny because he was telling me that it's shaking so hard that he has a hard time holding on. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

You would think he would just slow down a bit for now? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif
