when i try to start my car about it usually takes about 3 tries to get it going and sometimes a great deal more. It doesn't crank, i hear the solinoid click back closed after i release but only 1 in 3 times does it actually crank. I replaced the battery yesterday and that seemed to help a bit but it is still definately doing it with some regularity. It especially sucks for tuning cuz alot of times i'll stall at a light, try to restart and nothing for 5 or 10 tries which is definately not fun with cars behind you. What things can i check to start eliminating as the problem? Starter? engine/chassis grounds? the ignition switch itself? anything would be helpfull at this point.

Starter solenoid, possibly.

It's gotta be the solenoid. My car does that too. It's embarassing when I give a chick a ride and it takes like 20 tries to get it to crank.

the clutch cut switch (its on the floor) can do this too, the solenoid seems to need 12v and the switch is an add on in the circuit, and as it gets old....

its best to bypass it

my clutch switch is working pretty well, i get 13V with ignition on and it drops with the key in the "crank position" with clutch pedal not in cranking i get like 5V, this is on the tecII virual dash display so its what the computer is seeing sorta. Anyway, i tried three seperate times today and it caught on the first time each time. I dunno what the deal is, but i guess i'll finish doing come more grounding and replace the starter and solenoid. thanks

PRAY it gets fixed with the solenoid. A friend of mines old TII, he replaced the entire starting system and it still didnt crank right. We narrowed the problem down to the ignition switch I believe (was a long time ago) but he sold it anyways so we didnt bother.

just clean and or replace your battery terminals. baking soda & water

next



take you stater to xzy auto part for testing it should be free.

part get the lifetime warrenty one its worth the extra 30-50 bucks

yeah, got new battery. Also since i'm running a tecII i don't have any need for an upgraded ignition system. I'll get the starter checked as soon as i get a dry day to work on the car.

theres a couple of parts to the starting system. the 12v to the ingnition switch, the wire down to the clutch switch, and then it goes to the starter solenoid

mine did it when i had my 86 NA auto, there was once when it didn't work at all, and i was like "God, come on, help me out here". i must have clicked it like 100 times to avail. my mechanic changed the starter solenoid, still didn't help much. every time i drove that car, i had to click at least 3 times to get it to start. stupid RX-7 electonics. hopefully the RX-8 will have different electrical engineers on the team.
