I have an 87 RX-7. Nothing special about it. I think that my starter has gone bad. ITs not the starter interlock switch because i have now bypassed it. There is a plastic cover under the car that is over the engine. Do i have to remove that cover to get to the starter? Or is the starter behind the exhaust. Have any of you replaced your starter yourself? I could use some help with this problem. I can't find the starter so I need some advice. thanks

It bolts on from the tranny side to the back of the engine on the driver side

Seppuku 02-24-2003 09:50 PM

yep i cant remember if its covered by the cover though i cant remember right now

Seppuku 02-24-2003 09:51 PM

wait nevermind its not im completly possitive its not under the cover

j9fd3s 02-24-2003 09:52 PM

There are only two bolts and two nuts to remove. Its simple

Just disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin

Seppuku 02-24-2003 09:58 PM

yeah the power is nice to have off i remember accidently touching a wire on a starter once with the power on i wont go into detail but lets say you dont want to do it.

Shane.Trammell 02-24-2003 09:59 PM

i remember doing this. wasnt fun the first time. its not so bad though. the starter is on the drivers side next to the tranny. did you find it yet?? heres a tip. find a shop thats good at rebuilding starters and they will do it all for less than 80 bucks prob. that includes removal and installation. if you want to do it yourself its not so hard. what is it doing to make you think the starter is going out. let us diagnose your prob for you man.

When i turn the key i hear a click and nothing. THe battery is fine. i'm going to check the fuses today. I thought that the clucth starter switch went bad so i bypassed it. I tried pulling it but the snow covered roads prevented the wheels from spining. So i think that its the starter because i have no idea what else could be wrong.

thats what mine has done both of the times my starter has gone out.

donhayes 02-26-2003 09:13 AM

Thanks guys for the help. I got the starter off last night and I'm taking it in to have it checked.

donhayes 02-26-2003 06:28 PM

I checked the starter and its good. I checked the wires and they are sending the right amount of volts to the starter. The fuses are all good. But the car won't turn over. All i hear when i turn the key is the fuel pump running. I manually checked the starter and took it to the shop but I think that the starter might not be able to handle the voltage when started. I don't know what's wrong. Help please.

Shane.Trammell 02-27-2003 08:53 AM

i took mine to the shop and it showed to be fine, but it wasnt though. i dont remember exactly why it was doing that but oh well. take it to a starter shop and have them rebuild it.

Shane.Trammell 02-27-2003 09:01 AM

there you go. the entire thing will tell you what to do. just have the thing rebuilt it will save you time and money.

is the engine cranking at all ? or is it not catching?

RX7 13B 4 UR AZZ 02-28-2003 12:09 PM

some times starters go bad and when you have them checked they spin on there own but when they have a load applied they dont work. Tell the auto parts place that it wont turn it over to have them put a screw driver in the teeth and wacdth it not move. Now if it does move duck cause the screwdriver will go flying so you will look like an ass!!! lol j/k they just go bad sometimes.

donhayes 02-28-2003 12:32 PM

The selinoide went bad. When the starter is given a load like turning the flywheel it dosen't work. Thanks for the advice. I've ordered a new one because no one in my area repairs them cheap. thanks

USNALAX1 05-23-2003 07:05 PM

it's prob not this but just check and make sure your battery termanals are good. you never think there the problem but they can be a real pain!

also how do you bypass the starter interlock? does anyone have a writeup?

85rexgsl 03-22-2008 12:26 AM

+1 on the bypassing writeup, i just got me an 88 and im having electrical probs....ive replaced the starter and fuel pump, but i just noticed today that i dont have any power running to the fuel pump and when i turn the key i just get clicks too....idk... battery is good, starter works when i jump the solenoid... all the wires r plugged in, and all the fuses r good......im running out of ideas, last one i got is this bypass... anyone have any other suggestions??
