ok so had major disaster with my 88 n/a the past 2 days.
I think the clutch disk fell apart in the trans and started this sequence of events. i was driving in NYC and the car started giving bad slave cylinder signals, pedal stuck to floor bla bla bla. then the clutch started slipping reallllll bad and smoking a lot, stuck in NYC like an hour from home and nowhere to go i managed to make it to a parking garage. parked did my business then prepared for the trip home. basically everytime i had to stop id turn the car off then when it came time to move id leave the car in 1st and then start it, walking the car with the starter for a bit until it got started and began moving. whatever figure i gotta replace the clutch and slave cylinder...fine no problems. get it to work, start working on it today. drop the trans, sure enough all the clutch material is embedded on the flywheel, from what ive been told an sr motorsports 9.5# flywheel (might be the 11 lber, i am poretty sure its the 9.5 tho, its very light). SO i figure "ok well i'll buy a new face for the flywheel and buy a stock clutch and PP and be done with it. HOWEVER, as i begin removing the PP and **** i notice the ring gear on the flywheel is moving...the only thing stopping it from spinning around is the tops of 3 bolts built into the flywheel. Now i'm figuring this isn't supposed to happen, and if i reinstall it like that i'm going to spin that after starting it a few times. So a few questions: A) Is the ring gear shot? do i have to buy a new one? does SR motorsports even sell a new one to rebuild my flywheel with? B) I think i have an older style SR motorsports flywheel...do you think there current ring gear would still work? C) Will a stock OEM clutch and PP work on the SR Motorsports Flywheel? looks like my n/a is down and out of commission for a while, back to the suburban we go kevin. |
also anywhere to get a cheap flywheel in case this sr one costs too much to fix? the face alone is $149 im guessing the ring gear would be pricey as well. everywher ei go all i see is turbo only flywheels. plus i dunno if a stock clutch will fit the SR flywheel anyway.
maybe i should just pull the counterweight off and go back to a stock flywheel and stock clutch setup. ugh this was supposed to only be a beater, dammit! kevin. |
im pretty sure you cant the old ring gears anymore
|
This is why I would never get an aluminum flywheel. Find a stock one, or maybe a one piece chromoly.

For a DD/parts getter... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...withstupid.gif lol I used a lightweight steel one in my car, it's a good alternate to stock but if I drove it everyday to and from, it would drive me nuts. |
guess i'll try to find a stock one then since im pretty sure its the old design flywheel, now i have apretty paperweight.
now where am i going to find a used stock n/a flywheel? kevin. |
you can get the ring gear seperate 0866-11-702 for the na's, its supposed to be kinda press fit on there, doesnt suprise me the SR flywheel isnt though
|
is that a mazda part number? if so does it fit the sr flywheel?
found a guy willing to give me a flywheel for $25 + shipping from indiana so i think thats a pretty good deal. costs me $20 to get them resurfaced kevin. |
thats a mazda number. i know thats what racing beat uses on thier flywheels, ive seen the boxes. i bet thats what the SR one uses too, but you never know
|
any idea on the price of the ring gear?
kevin. |
dealer cost is 36.65, list is 61.10, i have no idea what discount you get, but now you can finger it out https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/ohmy.png
i can get you one, but i do add 10% plus shipping |
I have an S4 stock flywheel if you need it, though I'm sure shipping fees would suck. (from zip 32310, 24 lbs. I think)

i found one, having it priority shipped for $30 form indiana, + it cost $25. so $55 total, plus $20 to resurface so $75 total. and then $143 for a stock clutch/pp setup. $218 total for flywheel and clutch/pp. damn it. stupid daily cars arent dupposed to break. guess thats what i get for having a 7 as a beater lol https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png at least now i know everything is new so it should last for a while. oh i also replaced the slave for $41. kevin. |
Wouldn't you require a Front counterweight then?
