I have an 87 TII, My rear rotor had an apex seal explode so i swapped the motor.....

The problem/questions:

When I jump the fuel pump (with the yellow connector in the engine bay) my fuel pump runs. When I got start the engine, I have no indication (from a buddy in the back) that the fuel pump is running. So for now I have been trying to start it with the pump jumped.

When I do got start it, it cranks and cranks and cranks and finally it starts my tach goes to about 1500RPM and then it dies (without a sputter, just on/off)

My diagnostic lights tell me:

Code 06 - Throttle sensor.

DCC1: LS P ... (1 long light ... 1 short light ... long pause ... repeat)

DCC2: does not light

Fail-safe mode: The ECU assumes 100% throttle position.

I plan on addressing this tomorrow, but what else should I be looking at, or what else could this be?

Set the TPS, then see what happens.

j9fd3s 03-19-2007 12:17 PM

sounds like the afm is upplugged mebbe?

heathd505 03-19-2007 07:40 PM

Any other ideas?

- I checked my TPS with a meter and it did seem to have abnormal readings in comparison to the TPS that came with the replacement engine. So i swapped it out, my diagnostic lights did not show any other codes.

- I checked the connection to my AFM, it was connected correctly and in the correct orientation.

Same thing, when i tried to start it turned for a long time and finally turned over for a couple seconds and died. The next start is always hard too. It seems that if i give it a little throttle is dies sooner... Hopefully i'll be able to get out of work at a decent hour tomarrow and I'll go thru the vaccum lines again. I feel fairly confident that they are correct and in place though.

I say unplug the TPS eliminate that factor and I am leaning towards the AFM as well.

.....Well, unplugged the TPS, same thing... Checked the AFM, it checked ok, checked the AFM at the ECU it checked good. This is a little unorthodox, but when a buddy controlled the airflow with his hand over the afm it runs....... We checked the vacuum lines and even took the upper intake off to make sure everything was perfect, they all checked out good...... If my AFM is bad, I know I can get a reman at Autozone for $230ish but is there any other options (like no AFM + Piggy back) or a write up on AFM repair?

BTW thanks for the help....

You should be able to find one for cheap from someone on the forums, or a junk yard.

Have you check your lower intake manifold, or the intake-to-throttle body connection? Lots of available places for vacuum leaks.

I took my UIM off last night, I'm 100% confident that vacuum leaks from hoses are not an issue(Because the lines are new and everything is connected nicley). My uim mating to the lim was in question so i ordered a new gasket. (I torqued it, and then took it off for some reason and then retorqued it) I dont have any reason to believe there was a leak but i want to eliminate the possibility.

teknics 03-23-2007 11:47 AM

when your buddy blocks the AFM he's allowing the car to breathe through the leaks, at least thats what id imagine.

either that or your afm is shot.

If you haven't done this already then look at your FSM and check the AFM's resistance. Here's the link (AFM on page 61).... http://208.62.166.66:82/guest/shop_manuals...stems_turbo.pdf

That will tell you for sure if your AFM is bad.

heathd505 03-25-2007 12:46 AM

I had a chance to play with this a little today. I took the UIM off and re-sealed, when it was off I found that the injectors were XRIS-CROSSED!! So i put it all back togather with new gaskets, and everything is tight.....

Now, when I trigger the AFM the fuel pump kicks on (remember i have been jumping it) ... The only problem now is i get NO spark. I checked the connections at the computer, i noticed that the computer was really warm too but i dont know what it is like normally.

Resistance of the coils and CAS are good..... and i'm gonna call it a night...

teknics 03-25-2007 08:13 AM

how did you check for spark?

timing light.... Since no good, i tried the second check method of pulling a plug and watching for spark.

teknics 03-25-2007 05:18 PM

hmmm. possibly bad ignitor, dunno if theres a test for them.

did you check out the cas? got a spare one laying around?

Cas resistance is good. And it did run once (recently) although it was with life support.

Tomorrow after work I'm going to take the UIM off again and take lots of pictures, It's got to be something stupid. All of my wiring and hose connections are done based off Internet pictures. Hopefully this will give you some idea of what I’m doing....

heathd505 03-26-2007 09:01 PM

well after all my initial problems I finally found the last one. I ended up checking the injector voltage at the ecu. My connections were faulty after the last time I put it together. The engine feels strong and I'm very excited. The front primary wasn’t showing any voltage and the rear showed voltage even when disconnected. If my picture posts, this is what I found.....

I bandaged it up the best I could with what i had, but it will need attention fairly soon. Thanks everyone for the help and i hope to work with you again (And i probably will).. One good thing that came out of this is that I now know a lot more about my car.

My harness is in horrible shape............
