A compression check will let you know where you stand with the engine. The fluctuating idle is a common problem and is generally caused by the throttle position sensor (TPS). Check around the FAQ's in this forum and you will find a lot of useful info.

With all four plug wires properly attached, does the engine pull well to redline? If the car has been driven with one or more of the plugs disconnected, I'd replace them with new plugs.
