I noticed my steering wheel shuddering slightly the other day, and it pissed me off. I've replaced the suspension, the bushings, the ball joints, the wheels and tires, new brake pads and turned rotors, and had a good alignment done by a reputable shop. Then I noticed that at certain low speeds (~0-15) when I would let OFF the brake pedal, I would feel a slight bump or knock in the steering wheel, even at like 2 mph. After paying more attention, I noticed that the wheel shudder was occuring when I started to apply the brakes (only at slight pressure, after that the shudder stops). So what's the deal here?

I **** you not, one of my ball joint was just about to disconnect from my front control arm. And the other one had loose nuts as well. I'm thinking I replaced these before I realized that my impact wrench doesn't tighten all that tight (no listed torque values for ball-joint-to-control-arm listed in Haynes manual, IIRC).

drftk1d, please check all your connections.

God damned Baldy! Glad you found it before something broke!

well i know i need rear brake pads BADLY, and my steering wheel shakes alot while driving on the thruway.

can you help me out here guys?

when i get back home i will check this stuff. can you tell me what to look for exactly besides the a-arms and control arms?

Baldy 03-16-2005 07:32 AM

My steering wheel used to shake constantly. So I got new bushings, new suspension, new wheels, and a good alignment. I think the alignment and balanced tires should be good enough, unless something is loose.

The alignment shop said it was WAY off.

drftk1d 03-16-2005 10:57 AM

that sounds like alot, i wasnt planning on doing the suspension until after i put my other engine in...

Baldy 03-16-2005 12:38 PM

I was already doing all that, I wanted to get all that done before getting an alignment done. I was told that if I got an alignment, then did all that stuff, I'd have to get another alignment (which wouldn't be a problem if you got one of those "lifetime alignments"). But I think just for the steering wheel wobble, all I needed was the alignment.

Have I typed alignment enough? alignment. alignment.
