Hello guys

Glad I found this forum!! Just bought an 87 NA last night and I hate the play on the oem shifter. Do any of your know of a good short throw shifter that will fit my rx7?

This car is completely stock but very clean and runs great. I think the first mod (aside from a new shifter will be a new exaust. I am leaning towards the Borla

T-304 Stainless. Any of you have tjis exhaust installed. I want a nice deep note but also good performance

thanks

2 things:

The play in your shifter is caused by bad bushings, which you can get from a Mazda dealer or www.mazdatrix.com for around $15 for the set of 4.

Also, short throw shifters cause a pretty annoying in about 1/3 of all FC's, no matter what you do to try and avoid it.

That said, mazdatrix sells the shifters, so that's a good place to start looking.

ususally the shifter bushings die on these http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/shiftbsh.htm

I don't know about the borla. The thing with Rx-7 is that the exhaust is much hotter than that of a pist-on. So most glass pack mufflers will melt. You need to get mufflers that were designed for the rotary. My fav. are the Racing Beats www.racingbeat.com But search around, there are 5-8 good brands for our cars out there.

wow thanks for all the fast replies https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR !!!

If you want an inexpensive (and loud) exhaust and don't mind single exit, check out the catback at http://www.corksport.com

We've got the Borla on special this month https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Borlas are all stainless steel, no glass packing.

I have my Borlas for so long I cant remember exactly when

I put them on the car, I think like 5-6 years ago.

An inexpensive way to get a "shorter" shift feeling is to change out the knob. I purchased a Team Voodoo shift knob from Team Voodoo website.

Here's a pic of the knob I purchased, it lowered the overall lenght of my shifter and has a great feel. BTW - this is a picture from their website, I do not have an S2000.....

btw that knob won't fit your car... unless u swap a shifter from a 89 to 92 rx7.

thread and pitch is different.

I think S4 shifters are M12, while S5 are M10.

FWIW, S5, FD, miata all have same threads so u can interchange shift knobs from them.

Rob x-7 07-12-2003 04:20 PM

you can drill and tap the shifter, thats what I did, took all of

5 minutes to do.

Not true, you can order either thread or pitch size from Voodoo.

now I remember why I had to drill and tap my knob, the engraver

guy engraved the wrong one by accident, then shipped it to me

It was wrong so he discounted it for me and I kept it to keep things simple

Cheers! 07-13-2003 04:30 PM

rob,

how hot does the knob get? because i'm afraid that it will get hot sitting in the sun and when the tranny starts heating up

Nemesis 07-13-2003 04:34 PM

My steering wheels get a hell of alot hotter than the knob. It's not bad at all.

top down and the sun shining down on it and

there are no problems. In the pic you cant see the engraving on it or

the clear, they call them the Pearl knobs or some **** like that.

Cheers! 07-13-2003 04:58 PM

I like my Borla. And it ain't no stinkin' glass pack. It's all stainless, baby! And you can see right straight though it.

And I'm surprised how quiet it is. Now don't get me wrong, it isn't quiet, but it's quieter than I thought it would be with nothing but the Borla.

mazdadrifter 07-14-2003 10:33 PM

hey where did you guys get your shift boots?

Silver Ninety Three 07-14-2003 10:47 PM

I have the voodoo knob too. Its nice, doesn't get THAT hot. I wanted the titanium too but it cost too much to justify.

do you guys know a way to get ahold of voodo to order a knob other than emailing your cc #?? seems kinda risky

Nemesis 07-16-2003 12:43 AM

You can send them a money order.

the engraver guy for voodoo actually mailed me the knob and told me when

I got it to mail him a money order, very trusting guy, hope no one

screwed him over.
