are these the things that'll get rid of all the extra play in the stick? not that I mind some play with my stick, but theres a point where it goes too far

yes. well, usually anyway.

KingpinX 04-29-2005 08:25 AM

it makes for a much tighter stick "shift pattern" when your shifting it instead of going around in circles fighting your stick, it just kinda slips into place https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

....but ya i looked up those racing bushings, look way to big compaired to those plastic ones, my friend and i just got a ali pipe gonna create are own based off the plastic ones lub them up and give'em a go, if it turns out right i'll snap a pic of them and see if anyone wants to have some made for like $5-$10 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif

majeskyb 05-01-2005 12:39 AM

which one is it that usually goes out and causes the extra play- the upper or lower? Mine's quite loose, and would like to tighted it up.

GreyGT-C 05-01-2005 12:44 AM

it's the cap shaped dealie at the bottom of the shifter.

GreyGT-C 05-01-2005 10:35 AM

toplessFC3Sman 05-01-2005 11:31 AM

So wheres it located on an FC? I took apart the upper part of mine but didnt really see anything that could tighten it up.

KingpinX 05-01-2005 03:14 PM

holy hell....new plastic bushing boom shot to the curv, are ready broke https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif i'm go to hardware store get some ali pipe and create first ones to test https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png i'll take pics once i finish https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

majeskyb 05-01-2005 05:14 PM

Well, if I understand you right- I'll want to see those pics when you get done. Shouldn't be too hard, and I need to replace mine anyway

Found this- it clears out some of the confusion I've been having

Here's my problem:

I have an old school mazdaspeed Aspec short shifter. It's super tight and notchy which is great, but I think it's TOO tight and notchy. When driving agressively I miss 3rd like every time, which is a real bummer. That and the shifting effort is really high. Will replacing these bushings help this problem? should I re-install the stock shifter and upgrade to the aluminum bushings?

???

That is the nature of o short through shifter.

In order to make the throw shorter you increase the lower length which reduces the ratio and makes shifting take more force and transmits a notchier feel.

Ex. If the length from the pivot to the bottom is 1" & the length from the pivot to your knob (heh heh i said knob) is 5" your ratio is 5:1

to make the through shorter the bottom is 2" and the top is 4" now your input ratio is 2:1.

You can see the huge difference in input strength needed (3 times).

These numbers are made up for this example.

Work out your shifting arm and maybe get a taller shift knob. Mine from Pettit took a lot of effort, but I eventually adapted and now it feels perfect.

DareBee 05-08-2005 11:42 AM

Agreed

the short shifter is difficult at first, but once you get used to it - you never want to go back.

jackboots 05-09-2005 03:27 PM

I know it's difficult at first. this isn't my 1st short shifter.

I've been driving with this shifter for over a year and it still feels like something's wrong.

On the S5's there is another bushing down in the selector rod pocket.
