I've got a 4-port that has the stock Hitachi 18S-2S turbo(the fat one)& supposedly this means it's a series 5 motor, but I'd like some confirmation or some way to absolutely ID this engine....no other marks available on the exterior. THANKS! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.png

Take some pics. That will be a lot easier. Specifically the top of the rear iron, and where Mazda 13B is written on the rotor housings.

s4 has a threaded hole in the front of the center housing for the knock sensor,
s4 also has 2 bolt metering pump, aluminum 2 bolt thermostat neck, the turbo/ manidfold flange is at an angle s5, has threaded holes above the spark plugs for the knock sensor, 3 bolt metering pump, 3 bolt plastic water pump neck, turbo/manifold flange is vertical theres more than that, those are the easy ones |
Hey all. I was wonderin' the same about my engine and turbo. So here are some pics. Other people can base off of them too.
|
My comp is hating me right now, I'll post the rest later.

DANG!!!! Two fer two.....mine's a Series 5 as well....thanks for all the lineage info! Now to figure out just how much/what type porting this TII needs to be done to match a large turbo making 400-500HP@7,000RPM! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...

The plane is essentially built, including the fuselage, and an 8.5G test wing. Getting the right engine config, and mounting it amidships directly on CG without interfering with the retractable tandem main gear is the current sticking problem. And yes, since this aircraft is the first of it's kind in the world, and it is the most recognizable Sci-Fi bird out there(latest polls show!), It's sure to get heavy worldwide attention. I already have a test-pilot, and my entire Experimental Aviation group, the 43rd, is completely behind me. It's really a shame I don't have a engine sponsor like Racing Beat......this plane is gonna rock. One of the versions of her just pulled 420MPH in the sim with a setup emulating using their 900HP 3 rotor. That was in the e-mail I sent to Mederer, but I never heard back.....FLOL! I know that usually sponsors come a'calling after the fact, but it sure would be smart of some engine-builder to step up to the plate ahead of next years' first flight. By the way....any hints on how to make a dry-sump version of this engine? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

Technically, the stock setup is nearly a dry sump with the sump tank mounted to the bottom of the engine. Racing Beat isnt very likely to support your project. It doesnt suprise me one bit you havent heard back, and I wouldnt expect to. They make great products, but theyre not out looking for a lot more exposure. And quite honestly, they arent exactly helpful when you do manage to get replies from them. A series of emails I had with Jim Mederer left a bad taste in my mouth... |
Yea, I kinda figured. That's why I'm coming to places like this where the rubber meets the road. I know in my heart I'm going to have to make this happen on my own, despite the cost, but that's also why I'm so redudndant in my posts.....I need to get this right the first time! It's good to hear that a dry sump system can be done like that because I plan on using a flat plate support mount......it'll sit directly on top of the main frame rails, and accordingly to my old man, the machinist, I should be able to make a sliding rail system to pull the unit out through the ass-end of the bird from it's mid-engine position for R&R, ect. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png
PS: You mark my words......RB & whoever else is sitting on their thumbs is really gonna be kickin' themselves when some rotary-house takes up the banner of aviation engines. Atkins & Powersports are just too caught up in makin' the big bucks right now to corner the upcoming market.....it'll probably be some no-name shop that sees the light, and ends up owning the aviation rotary engine market.....FLOL! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif |
