After getting my ass kicked by a near stock '86 GXL I have come to relize that my TII has problems. I have a cone filter w/mafs adapter, 3" exhaust, and a 3" downpipe. The car seems to be getting slower. It does'nt smoke bad and I cant find any exhaust leaks (even though it smells like there is one). I think the turbo is going bad on me and its time for a upgrade. Its an '87 TII. What all is involved? I have the following:
Cheap T-70 w/HKS flange SS Exhaust manifold Starion FMIC setup Fuel Cut Defencer Aftermarket Boost Gauge What else do I need? A wastegate? What size? I only want to run about 10psi at the moment. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif |
You should work out your problems first with what you have. It could be a simple vacuum leak to the double throttle butterflies getting stuck or even stuffed cats. You should not be getting beat by a gxl, you should be leaving him in the dust.

You say it smells like an exhuast leak and the car is getting slower...check for leaks between the block and turbo manifold and between the manifold and the turbo. Blown gaskets here would create a leak and cause an increase in lag. Compression?
Your first priority is getting the car running 100 percent in stock condition. If you're turbo is bad search for a s5 turbo and manifold, they can be had for 200-250 dollars. What you're looking at doing is thousands of dollars. The starion core isn't that great, if you're doing a junkyard IC use a NPR core, or better yet a spearco core. With the turbo and manifold you'll need: custom oil lines, possibly custom coolant lines, a good front mount with blow off valve, walbro or better fuel pump, bigger injectors, custom downpipe to fit the v-band on the new turbo, external wastegate, a good boost guage, money and time for tuning, standalone ems - wolf/e6k/lt8 etc.... |
