Tried looking in the FAQs, but didn't find anything. I'm assuming they're motors and the differences between OBD cars and non-OBD cars. Forgive my ignorance, but I'm new to the whole rotary thing. Been driving VWs for the past several years and am not familiar with all of the alphabet soup designations for different motors/chassis. I may be looking at picking up an 87 Turbo2 that is in need of some TLC. Looking for an inexpensive rear drive track car, and the 240sx is just too played out for my tastes.

You guys seem to have a nice little (well, maybe not so little) forum going. See you around.

You'll also see S4 and S5 referred to as Zenki and Kouki respectively. Not as common, but I bump into the terminology now and again. Zenki = "before" and Kouki = "after." Basically the 2nd generation RX-7 went under basically a complete redesign for the 89 model year. A lot of things aren't compatible between S4 and S5 cars.

Just a series.

Started with the SA as series one. I dunno how the FB's were done as far as series. S6 is the FD, but you won't hear that very often, you will just heard FD, or financial disaster.

Are there major changes that make the S5 series vastly superior? Or are most of the differences evolutionary?

No, not really. Slight body changes, a few interior changes. The automatic seat belts which was a waste of time. Tail lights, plastic filler neck, mechanical or electrical OMP, I forget.

Nothing major. Oh, and an up in horsepower and up in compression's for the rotors. But not enough horsepower to really notice a big difference.

S4 & S5 cosmetic changes (in & out) plz keep in mind that there are not huge changes.

Rear Tail Lights, Front bar, Mouldings (S4 tends to stick out a bit/S5 are more flush), Seats, Main Instument Cluster and Idiot Instrument Cluster.

The big difference between the S4 and S5 is the actual skeleton, don't have the best knowledge on this area but a mate had problems with the gear box tunnel and a few other things. but all in all they are the same.
