Hello,

I am in the process of using a standalone with knock sensor support. I need to know whether the knock sensors that came on the S4, S5, RE engines are a tuned sensor (i.e Narrowband type) or a Wideband type that needs some filtering circuity to utilized in any engine management system. Dow any one have any incite as to whether they are effective or a waste of metal? Thanks in advance!

well if it helps, the s4 sensor plugs into a "knock box" and then to the ecu. the later ones go direct. just due to the age, id think they were narrowband, but thats just a guess

Rear iron near oil filter, on S4. Only TII has knock sensor.

i've heard some say with a rotay "all it takes is one knock to destroy your engine" is this an exaggeration? if it is not, than all a knock sensor would do is tell you when your engine got destroyed, which you would probably realize for other more dramatic reasons. i find it hard to believe that one single knock is all it takes.

don't most people tune their spark advance my stepping it up until they detect knock, then retard it by a few degrees? this would also be impossible with a rotary.

like i said, i doubt that one knock will kill the engine, but i'm just looking for a little clarification.

Thanks.

depends on the knock there is small knock then there is a big knock one big knock will take out most any car not just a rotary engine. knock can melt pistons break rods bend cranks blow heads it all depends on the severity of the knock. light to moderate knock can do damage also but less likely.

one knock wont kill your engine, BUT you cant always hear it

also the stock knock sensor only works up to 4000rpm
