Well, it's about time I got around to finishing off the fender wells on this project!

I started by degreasing and pressure washing what little grime was on there, forced the surface dry with heat and some air, wire wheel and sandpaper prepped, and masked the goodies in the well that don't need paint, etc.

Next was a quick solvent wipe down, then a healthy application of dtr epoxy via a conventional set-up, good stuff too, lays out nice and even and is available to top coat in 45 minutes.

The final lick was some truck bedliner spray simply shot from bomb cans, which when sprayed at about two feet away from the surface leaves a nice even, orange peel-like texture. I'll snap a few more shots later, here's one for now of the finished product...

interesting masking as well, is that some fancy industrial stuff or is it aluminum foil?

lol, good 'ol aluminum foil, best masking ever!

It would take a crapload of paper, tape and time to replicate the same mask job.

It doesnt flake either when you unmask, bigger pices can be reused.

Where are my manners? Thank you for the compliments! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I think it's worthwhile, and after I mildly restored the car, I won't even drive it in the rain. It just offers some protection; both from the old grime and ever growing rust that, for some cars, could have started forming prior to the showroom, and from road debris. It makes the wells easy to maintain, they can be cleaned up and detailed nicely.

drftk1d 07-18-2005 07:02 PM

by the way it looks good (along with the rest of the car)

89 Rag 07-18-2005 07:14 PM

smart thing would be to do it BEFORE you put the fenders on

well yeah, I didn't think of it either.

I was a pig and painted the plastics part of the wells also, but I did mask off the fasteners and bolt heads though and I had to use tape on them. I swear that foil is handy, I try too use it too much.

banzaitoyota 07-18-2005 07:48 PM

Do it before the fenders are on, that why the whole inner structure can be protected. Plus while the feners are off paint the top structure gloss black to match the engine bay and make a professional looking transition

Rob x-7 07-18-2005 07:56 PM

transition to what?

thats kind of what i was implying...

coldfire 07-19-2005 12:29 PM

wow, that looks great. protection is always key, i love seeing a clean 2nd gen. becoming harder to find day by day though...

and the aluminum foil is a great idea, now i have another tool in my masking arsenal, lol

just a quick question, could you give some more info on the "dtr epoxy" you mentioned?

thanks

you stole my idea. j/k nice job i plan to do the same in the future maybe even do the whole underside of the car

inanimate_object 07-19-2005 06:13 PM

I don't know whether you have waxoyl over there, but it's great stuff for areas like that.

Rotorfest this year showed the quality of FCs have risen,, seems like all the RX7s are starting to follow a trend- the crappy cars are becoming parts cars the good cars keep getting better.

yup, you may be right. just when looking at FCs for sale it's hard to find a nice clean one...and when there is, you have to pay $$$.

although it could be because i live in Canada, lol

Direct to rust=DTR epoxy, I used Pittsburg Paint's industrial DTR, there are other ways to do it, but this stuff works great. If you can get a paint "skin" out of a bucket and get it on a metal table, try breaking it by hitting it with a sledge hammer. The strange part is, the thicker the millage on the epoxy, the easier it breaks, the thinner the millage the stronger it is.

Rob x-7 07-20-2005 08:51 PM

you should know that more paint actually chips easier and becomes more brittle

I'm aware, just making a point for any novice, more doesn't always mean better.

Even though the phrase "it will never rust under a run" is popular on the industrial side of painting, i'm more partial to the phrase, "don't practice bad habits".

If the paint is running, you're doing something wrong.

Rob x-7 07-20-2005 09:19 PM

there is a run from a million years ago on my fender- no matter how many times I block that fucker down and its gone it always pops right the **** out during rotorfest from the intense heat.

Im talking it got blocked down when I painted it, blocked again when it showed up, blocked down to the primer and repainted that section, and it STILL came back this year. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

******* black paint, I think Ill just have to get a new fender.

And it didnt show up for like 3 years, only after the car finally got garaged did it show up

I always like the bullshit question- "how many coats of clear am I going to get"??

I remember you talking about that run in the fender before, it really is a mystery as to why it still comes back.

The clear thing kills me too, I would love to see the look on someone's face when you told them you we going to lay it on at 30 mils with a 3/4" nap! "Hey jerkey, the other day I painted your car with a roller and a brush!"

Rob x-7 07-21-2005 05:55 AM

most high solids clears these days are only 2 coats

venomrx7 07-23-2005 11:47 PM

I did this exact same thing to my Tundra a couple days after i got it. I just cleaned and prepped the wells, masked off, and sprayed on the truck bedliner stuff in the aresol can from advance auto parts. Its still holdin up great even after many barrages of rocks, sand, gravel, mud, burnouts, do-nuts, and whatever else you could throw at it. It also looks OH so nice when you do a full detail and shine up the wheelwell along with everything else.
