About a week ago I was told by a friend that there was a RX-7 in the area that was for sale. Said it was Turbo car, has a harness problem and the kid gave up on it. I finally got a phone number for the guy selling it on Thursday evening. I do not know the area that well and I was unsure about how to get where it was. So the buddy called, no answer on Saturday, we left a message to return the call. Guy calls back and says the car is still for sale and it is a turbo, but he is unsure of the year, maybe 88 or 89. So we hop in the buddies expedition and head out. Roll into the guys driveway and there it sits, 1988 Turbo II w/ 5 speed. I expect a 20 something kid to come walking out, boy was I surprised to see a 40+ yr old man come out.
The story goes like this, the kid that owned the car spent a lot of money on the car, to include a streetport, new turbo, 5 speed rebuild, new exhaust, tires etc etc. Something happend in the wiring or computer and the car will not start. So the kid got fed up and gave it to the guy. The car has been in his garage for the past 4 years, and was put in the yard about 6 months ago, rust free and beautiful. There are about $7000 worth of receipts in the car, for the motor, the transmission and other stuff, plus the receipt when the kid bought the car which was another $8000. I looked through the folder of all the receipts and just shook my head. Now being that the guy is a big V8 guy he was clueless about the secrets of the triangles. I looked over the car quickly and snapped a few pictures. I wanted to get out of there before the guy realized what he had. If I had started to dig he might see my excitement on what was in front of me. So we shook hands, I agreed to buy the car and we parted ways. I paid $500 for the car.... Here are a few pics |

Thanks J9, I may have to take you up on that, I want to get it here to the house and figure out what all has been done. Since there was no battery in it, I did not want to get it running there and have the guychange his mind, I just want to get it out of the clutches of the man, he wanted to drop a V8 in it :P

Looks good dude.

I'll post more pics when I get the car here to the house, you guys will like it, and still not believe I only paid $500
Sounds like one of the stories you always hear of the guy that finds the corvette in the house of some old lady that says its her sons that died in Vietnam right? |

Honestly the guy I am buying it from does not know anything about rotaries, he drove it once before it quit running and before it was GIVEN to him. He was planning on the V8 swap and 9" rear in the car, He knows of rotaries, but not about rotaries. He said the owner had called a shop, dunno which one, and they had quoted $2000 to get the car running based on the description the kid had said. I started laughing, for $2000 I could put a standalone in the car.
I am really undecided right now, the car has a sunroof, and I want to drag it. I have 2 86 base models and I would rather have the solid roof car. I am damn glad I don't have to worry about T-tops. The undecisiveness comes from the modifications to a beautiful car. I never have believed cutting up a good car for drag racing. Depending on the problem with getting it running I may sell the car to a better home. Why you ask? I would really hate to see this car damaged by the modifications needed for me to run it. The funds from the sale of the car would fund the drivetrain I would need for my 86 and my other modifications. Seriously the car is worth 5x what I paid for it (if running) I would rather see the car get a nice home and go to somebody that would enjoy it a lot more than I would in its present condition. All of this is still speculation, there is a bit of troubleshooting I need to do before I make my mind up. As we all know the FC is a hard car to find in pristine condition. A find like this is almost unheard of. If I do sell the car the new owner will see all the receipts for the car as I did, so they will know exactly what has been done to the car. The car itself did not sell me on it, the receipts did. On a side note, if you look in the picture of the dashboard there is a Racing beat boost gauge just to the right under the colum, on it is a button of some type, anybody have a clue what it is for? |
Your so lucky man that you found one it that condition for so cheap and its turbo...if i woulda found that i would have 3,500 left for mods omg.Congrats again and good luck. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif
|
that knob is supposed to be a boost adjuster.
any rust on the car? i like it, its not raped yet and looks to be all there let me know what your doing with it |
man you got lucky, glad it worked out in the end https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif
does the engine turn over or is it seized ? |
There was not a battery in the car, I was not going to even try to turn it over, I basically bought it because of the drivetrain, I have 3 S5 turbo motors here.
|
i was gonna say you got a racingbeat old school boost gauge and boost controller in there very clean car. fix it and make it run and drive it around while you build the 86's !
|
So we hop in the buddies expedition and head out. Roll into the guys driveway and there it sits, 1988 Turbo II w/ 5 speed.
Awsome find.......not to be a dink though, its a 87 Tll not an 88. All 88 turbos were 10th anniversary additions. Besides that point...wish I came acroos a deal like this too, sweet!! |
nice find
and great job saving another possible rotary casualty |
