wassup everybody? i have ruled it out. my car has got to have some new differential mounts. everytime i stomp on it or let the clutch out with high revs, the rear end sounds like its gonna fall out and the rear struts are goin through the rear hatch. where can i get some better than stock mounts(how much?) and how hard is it? anyone know of any sites that give DIY's or somethin?

I just took a diff off of a GXL and is was a pain in the ass.

As far as getting mounts you can go to places like mazdatrix, or mazdaformance for them.

You need to drop the rear subframe. Look at the factory service manual, you can get that at iluvmyrx7.com

it's not that bad, it takes an afternoon to do, that is unless you start snaping bolts and **** doesn't loosen.

You have to loosen the rear subframe bolts, then there are several others i can't rmeember of the top of the head, the rear subframe is hardest, they are are huge bolts that thread through a large bushing. You support the diff with a jack and slowly lower it... ofcourse u need to undo your drive shaft also. And if those bolts haven't been loosened recently they are really on there, especailly if they have loctite on them.

good luck.

agreed, not that hard, you should be able to do it in about 3-4 hours. it's not that annoying or frustrating (at least mine wasn't), just takes a little time and being willing to get dirty.

i learned a lot changing out my front diff mount, about how our rear suspension are designed and assembled. i'd recommend doing it.

you can get a competition differential mount from mazdatrix.com for like $110 or so. i change mine out and have been drag racing about 3 times since then with no problems, and i get mad wheel hop.

yeah its not really hard, its just big and under the car

aggie- watch it with the wheelhop, thats the thing that breaks diffs

up&coming 05-10-2004 08:13 PM

yeah, that's how i broke the first one...which had already been broken and re-welded.

i've learned to slip the clutch a lot better so my wheels dont slip as much. i guess instead of changing out a diff mount, i'll just end up changing out the clutch.

next time i drag, though, i'll try softening the rear dampers and see if that wont allow my tires to bounce instead of my whole rear end.

The job of dropping the diff is a pain and time consiming but definitely not difficult.

I tried to press 1 of the mount bushing out once on my '90..damn thing was in so tight it broke the thin half of the aluminum pot right off. Luckily I had a parts car. I figure next time I will burn out the rubber and slit the steel ring in half with a die grinder and pry them out. This may seem unnecessary but better safe than sorry.

Cheers..I mailed you a package.
