Funny... your screen name is 9second7 yet you haven't taken a trans out of one yet. The name is a little misleading.
Why are you taking it out? While it's out check the pilot bearing, make sure it's in top notch shape. If it is bad the trans you will be putting back in there will not last. |

Here are some useful tips: Put everything in gladlock zip bags as you take it out, and label the bags(this ensures that your not looking for the parts later). Before that make sure that you inspect all of your parts, you should already have a new throw out bearing, clutch, and pressure plate(and while your at it this would be a good time to replace the pilot bearing roller or solid is your preference, I prefer brass IMO). Make sure that you mark the wiring with some tape and a pen. Before the removal you could probably hit all the easy to get to bolts with some pb blaster or wd40, makes your life a whole lot easier. If your putting in a used tranny this is also a good time to check it out to see if its any good. GOOD luck with you project, if you get pissed off remember to hit someone elses car not yours....JK. Have fun.

Hey guys thanks for all the advice, I just pulled out the tranny ( damn this **** is super light). I think this was the easiest job I ever did on a rx-7. Now i just got to install my new clutch and put it back in and I'll be good to go. Thanks for the help, Im still surprised at how light the tranny is , I didnt think i could lift it up and put it over my shoulder to put into my garage, but surprisingly i did it.

my mustang tranny was heavy as sin, had to put a new pump shaft seal in it.

Is it that simple to pop one of those bitches out? Im looking to purchase a 88 gxl, and it needs a clutch..and I've never really been forced to do a clutch job myself.
Ah the mustang.. aka, the slip wrench bash your knuckle into something sharp because everything is so ******* close together you'd think you're wrenching on an import car.. |

Im removing my tranny this weekend, Ill be putting in a new centerforce dual friction clutch. I was pretty scared about the weight of the tranny, but I feel much better now knowing its pretty light. Let me know how it goes putting your clutch in. Its my first as well. Hopefully 1Revvin7 and BigTurbo74 will be helping me, but if not Ill be doing it myself.

my centerforce d/f clutch blew up after about 3,000 miles.
kevin. Sorry to hear that man. |
I haven't heard much good about CF clutches on RX-7s, but if you already have it, I guess it's too late.

well went looking for it, parents probably threw it away but basically 3/4 of the lining just fell off and got wedged between flywheel and pp forcing my clutch to stay engaged. it still had plenty of life on it too, like i said it was probably about 3,000 miles old. i threw an ACT S/S clutch disk and new throwout bearing on and reused the centerforce pp. it seems to be working very well after about 1,000 miles. kevin. |

well i got it for 200 bucks and i needed a new clutch so it was convenient. Did you beat on it right after you put it in? I was told you should baby it for the first 1k same as if you got a new motor. Theres a guy with a 700hp FD who swears to these clutches still, another guy I know had his in and was fine up to just under 500, but then started to slip on him.

Generally i'm a big mileage guy. in 2 years of having my license i've driven over ~73,000 miles (a little more or less then 40,000 in my first year with my wrangler, and about 32,000 in 14 months with my durango) kevin. |
wow, that is a lot of miles! I put about 3-4k miles on a year, thats about it, and I drive all the time, but I do store my TII in the winter so yeah that definately helps.
