I'm removing my power steering pump. Do I just loop the in and out that went to the pump? Can I cap the in and out for the cooler or do I need to loop that also? If I'm all wrong jus let me know.

Thanks

Dave

i just plugged the holes where the high pressure pump lines went and the cooler line. then looped the lines on the rack (all you really should loop)

i just capped everything right on the rack, left a bit of fluid in it so it wont seize

yeah you can do that but then you have to compress air when you turn the wheel.

you loop the two fittings on the actual rack housing, everything on the gear body gets capped.

inside the rack housing theres a piston, on the actual rack, theres two fittings on two opposing sides of this piston... you loop the lines so the contents of one side can pass through the line to the other side so you don't have to compress the contents when turning with everything capped. Just run a line from one fittings at one side of the rack to the other, done.

I didnt cap anything. i just cut the lines removed the Power Steering CPU and was done with it. i later removed the left over lines and fittings. why should i have to cap anything? should i have?

pengaru 04-09-2003 10:47 PM

because then you just make a big assed mess and let all the nasty crap in the environment into your rack.

relisys190 04-09-2003 11:37 PM

And what happens when it gets into the Rack? can it freeze up? stop working??

to tell you the truth i'm not sure what to expect, but I'd be concerned with corrosion on the inside of the rack, but it will be a while before the oil is completely gone. also the rack is designed to be lubricated by the PS fluid, if you ljust leave everything open you must have leaked most of it out by now, when it's all gone there will be no more lube, and it will probably start wearing and get sloppy...

and yes since it is something which involves gears meshing if you get some serious **** in the holes it can cause interference, this should be covered by common sense.

how about a manual steering rack swap from a series four..

I do, see this thread. But I don't know if that's something I should keep, or if it'll me worth it to me to pull and sell it.

pengaru 04-10-2003 12:41 PM

The PS rack has a quicker ratio, which can be nice.

smitty 04-10-2003 05:42 PM

I guess it wasn't such a stupid question after all. Thanks for all the input and details.

Loop it, loop it, loop it. Every time you turn the wheel one way or the other it tries to move fluid out of the rack. With it looped, fluid moved easily and freely side to side. Simple.

it goes right in. it is a slower ratio, so you have to be fast with your hands
