hi, i have a 91 rx7 n/a, manual, i wanna take off the shift knob, but i don't know how to....i don't wanna break anything, i've tried twisting it, but haven't tried hard because i don't know if it is a screw type...could anyone help me?
|
theres a jam nut butted against the bottom of the shifter knob. take a wrench of appropriate size and hold the jam nut in place while unscrewing the knob, it will come apart. Try not to simply twist the knob off, if it's pretty tight you can cause some damage to the bushing/ball/pin down under the boot trying to get it off carelessly.
|
might I also suggest a strap wrench, I seem to remember
loosening that nut on the bottom a bit to make it easier to remove the knob? So when you put a new knob on you screw it down and then tighten the nut against it to hold it in place. |
???
**** i just twisted my **** knob off... ididn't notice any jam night. =( |
It might help if you pull of the skirt (woohoo!), so you can see that jam nut. At least that's how mine is. Screw the nut down, unscrew the knob up. Comes off easy that way.

S5 has no jam nut?
|
thanks a lot...there was no jam nut....it was just really on there
|
nut is under the shift boot, if your S4 doesnt have it then someone
forgot to put it back. cant confirm the existance of one on a S5 its a nut, not a screw, its almost round with only 2 sides that you can put a wrench on and its nice and shiny chrome. |
a friend with s5 experience informs me that the s5's don't have a jam nut, he cursed the 'update' and said it's a pain to get the knob off when the lever is out of the car as a result... something about blocks of wood and a vice around the ball? heheh
