ok, my car is a 88 GXL 5 Speed, i have an aluminum shift knob in place of the old factory one, i changed my tranny fluid about 20,000 miles ago and its right on the mark. the other night i noticed my shifter was getting pretty warm, i know since the new shift knob is aluminum its gonna transfer a little more heat from the tranny than the old stock leather one. so when i got home i lifted it up onto jackstands and the tranny was hot as hell, it felt almost as hot as the exhaust pipes would be? and the thing is it only does this about every other day when i drive for more than 20 miles or so? the tranny fluid isnt low or anything, anybody got a guess? or idea to what the prob may be? thanks, later

You're shifter could be getting hot becuz the middle boot, those rubber rings, could have melted away. Check those out, yes trannies run HOT. thats why some trucks have tranny coolers.

how hard is it to rebuild a transmission, from a technical point of view? I am often bored, and if I can find a rex trans to rebuild and swap into my car, I will, (my 2nd gear synchro's are trying to die, and I don't have the time to drop the tranny and rebuild that one, it is my only means of transportation) that, or, I have heard of people swapping miata transmissions, or differentials into their car, I like the idea of upgrading with junkyard parts.

If the fluid is full, dont worry about the tranny until one day it doesnt want to work anymore, did you put the correct fluid in there? Transmissions get as hot as a engine or exaust to the touch, just dont touch it when its hot and youll be fine, maybe you noticed the heat more now with that shifter mod you did.

it gets hot at night too when the sun isnt out shining on it? i dunno, from what you guys are saying it doesnt sound too bad then, thanks for the help :bigok:

i think you need a lot of mazda only tools to rebuilt a tranny and theres a **** load of pieces inside too, take a look at the haynes manual where they have the tranny blown apart, lots of little parts, id go crazy trying to put it back together, lol
