I read of people removing the rat's nest.

What is it?

What does it do?

pros and cons or removal?

ease of removal?

shoe size?

I thought it had something to do with emissions, which I have no concern for with this car.

banzaitoyota 02-14-2003 02:39 PM

Rats nest is the removal off all wiring and solenoids associated with emissions and the twin scroll system.

Baldy 02-14-2003 02:43 PM

so it's not pertinent to an n/a?

pengaru 02-14-2003 02:52 PM

actually the rats nest is just the clusterfuck of metal tubes, brackets, and solenoids which resides under your upper intake manifold. You can remove it easily if you eliminate your emissions junk. You can eliminate it without removing the connectors / wiring from the harness which relates to it, but it is cleaner if you remove the related wiring also.

Baldy 02-14-2003 02:54 PM

is there a writeup of this somewhere?

...since I've already got my uim off, and the lim is about to come off

Turbo II 02-14-2003 02:56 PM

really does lighten ur car up https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png makes it look a lot cleaner

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif Rats have nests? WTF

Baldy 02-14-2003 02:58 PM

actually, the place I used to work had rats, and they do build nest-like piles of insulation and paper

Baldy 02-14-2003 03:05 PM

and would someone care to post a reply on the tb mod thread, before I head home for the weekend (regarding jb weld)? thanks!

Blink 02-14-2003 03:07 PM

damn i should have ditched all that crap when i put my new motor in.. what a mess hehe

i just figured i needed those solenoids and the boost pressure sensor thing https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

75 Repu 02-14-2003 03:08 PM

I know how much of a pain that **** is cuz I had to remove that **** at the junkyard once, I imagine it must be even worse when you are trying not to break anything important..

Baldy 02-14-2003 09:08 PM

but does anyone know what to remove on an 86 n/a? I've got it all apart, and want to take full advantage of the situation

and is there some kind of sealant I'm supposed to use with the intake manifold gaskets?

banzaitoyota 02-14-2003 10:07 PM

Use Hylomar. I Look at my TII Harness thread.

Baldy 02-15-2003 09:28 PM

It seems that it'll only be worth it if I had a tII. I'll just leave all that stuff in there, cancelling the risk of me messing up anything.

pengaru 02-15-2003 09:41 PM

I don't know about that, if you don't have to pass emissions tests I'd say get rid of it and eliminate all the bullshit.

Baldy 02-15-2003 10:21 PM

it's just that all that topic on the other forum was for the turbo, and I'm not sure if I can make the translation

well I did it on mine when I installed my new engine, it's pretty straight forward.

You just remove the ac&cv (blockoff plate) remove the rats nest, get some fuel line and run it directly to the fuel rails for the feed/return lines... After that you just cap all the vacuum lines except the one that goes from the LIM to the dynamic chamber (the one for the injectors at idle), connect the FPR directly to one on the dynamic chamber, and you leave the boost sensor connected to the UIM on the stock nipple... everything else, capped.

I eliminated my stock oil injection so i'm not sure if you have to do something to handle that if you keep it, I don't recall how exactly the oil injection works, I think it gets vacuum possibly, it would be easy to find out by looking at a diagram.

my car is running fine now, and theres none of that junk.. I have yet to hack up the harness and remove the connectors/wiring related to the emissions solenoids that have been removed, but that can be done at any point.
