Hey guys,

im new here from Rx-7.com...Anyways, I just got my racing beat cat-back for my 87 TII and im looking to install it this upcoming weekend, I was just wondering if I could get some pointers.. (since this is the first cat-back i've ever installed.) Right now im just thinking about how i should go about doing it, should i put the Y-pipe in first then put the mufflers on... or should i assemble the system and just put it all on?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

thanks,

Anthony

build it from the front up and don't tighten anything until everything lines up right.

I got the car in the air, loosened all the hanger bolts, assembled the system, rolled it under the car on a creeper, got it up and swinging on the hangers and then bolted it all together. It isn't a bad idea to have some new hanger doughnuts on hand before installing the system. The 2nd gens aren't geting any younger and all the parts like that are getting very brittle/worn out.

89 rag, so you put the system together then then put the hole thing on? hmm... So should i just hang the mufflers first and then bolt it to the cat, and then tighten everything else when it's all lines up? Seems easy enough. The only thing im a little worried about is the two smaller bolts the connect the stock y-pipe to the cat (not the bigger ones where you just tighten the nut but the two smaller ones for the mounting bracket) seem pretty rusted and i don't know if i'd be able to get them off.

But thanks for the advice https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

Those aren't usually too bad, the closer you get to the engine, the bolts/nuts become harder to brake loose

Use some pb blaster or other lubricating fluid and let it soak in before you attempt to loosen the nuts, and use a wrench with a long handle for more leverage, better than a ratchet or air tools, you can't see a stud twist with a socket capping it off.

Well, I got under the car today and it turns out the two main bolts that connect the y-pipe to the cat are on so tight i can't get them loose, I tuged on those damn things for like an hour, i even tried putting the wrench on the nut and forcing it with my foot. I guess it dosen't help that i ran out of WD-40. And as for the smaller bolts (that bolt on the bracket) i started to take one of those off and it just broke in two along with a tiny part of the heat shield! I guess its just not my day. looks like i'll have to take my baby to a shop to have it put on... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

Well, I got the system on sunday, thank god... But i have run into a couple set backs. The first is that i wasn't thinking when i was taking the old exhaust off and i cut the hangers off the brackets that are attached to the cat... seems imposible to get them back on. And second, i forgot to attach that two brackets to the hangers at the rear of the mufflers, those seem like they are going to be a bitch to put back on. But im going to get back under there as soon as i get off work to see what i can do. I just took it on the first drive since last november when i put her in storage... so much fun i was shaking!

Oh, and thanx for the help 89 Rag.
