please dont link me to FC3Spro.org or something, i have an 86 N/A and the sites ive seen only support this mod for the TII's, my TB is different than the ones showing in those pages, can somebody direct me elsewhere?

TIA,

Leo

1Revvin7 11-24-2002 06:24 PM

i used that site, u just have to figure it out, they are basically the same, jsut some minor differences

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-24-2002 07:14 PM

since i have it out, i might as well try it, thanks

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-24-2002 07:15 PM

oh,,,, but question, which butterfly am i taking out? the one thats all the way in the front? or one of the two that sit directly over/under each other?

1Revvin7 11-24-2002 08:06 PM

man don't mess that up, I can;t remember off hand, but the instructions are pretty clear on which ones.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 11-24-2002 08:40 PM

I used the directions there for both my cars. The stuff you are removing is pretty much the same. The butterfly that you are removing is the first pair that are alone (looking in the direction the air would flow).

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-25-2002 07:25 AM

so i am removing the one that is opened by a valve actuator?

thats the one that sits by itself.

pengaru 11-25-2002 08:41 AM

yes. It should look something like this after you remove it:

http://pengaru.com/~swivel/cars/rx-7/10-22...02/IMG_1792.JPG

note the holes left behind, thats where the shaft WAS which you are removing. This throttle body has also undergone some porting but is unfinished in the picture... and has yet to visit the welder to get the holes filled.

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-25-2002 09:02 AM

do they have to be filled? also can i polish it myself? does polishing it make an increase in power/flow?

ILUVMY88CABRIO 11-25-2002 02:37 PM

Yes, you can put a plug in the hole where the shaft was, or use JB weld. Have you gone to FC3spro, and read the instructions? Alot of the questions you have are answered in the step by step provided there. Go through and read all the steps while you have your TB in your hand, then come and ask any questions.

I paid $35 to a local welding shop to have them TIG weld a bunch of holes in my intake parts, included were the holes left from double throttle removal from the TB, the hole I created in the TB primary bore when porting (visible in the link in above post..), the oil injector holes in the LIM, another hole i made in the LIM primary port runner (one of them) where there was a bump to clear a bolt for the ACV which I grinded off... and the aux port actuator holes. Oh, and not to mention the holes in the UIM for the sub-zero cold start assist.

Next I get to dremel all the welds and blend it all in like the holes were never there. $35 is relatively cheap for something that is never going to flake/chip from the gas/oil/heat... I strongly recommend finding a good local welder.

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-25-2002 07:44 PM

thank you thank you! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

do you have to remove the shaft? or is it ok to leave it there? i took out the 2ndary butterflies this weekend but didnt have time to remove the shaft, can i leave it or will it mess something up?

I'm sure you could leave it in, but why? If you removed the butterflies then the hard part is over. I had to drill one of mine out. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif Just buy the plugs, and tap the hole.

Geoffman72 11-26-2002 02:46 AM

Yes, for sure buy the plugs and tap them. Ive heard stories of people who used JB Weld sucking them into the engine https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

pengaru 11-26-2002 06:31 AM

Just have the holes TIG welded shut from the inside and you can grind it down smooth & seamless.

1revvin7:

I have pictures, but they are still on the camera, I will download them when I get to work and post a url... They are of the unfinished welds though so it's nothing pretty, the welds are nice and heavy so it should turn out nice after I attack with the dremel.

TurboII:

The car is coming along, I'm just waiting on one more tension bolt from mazdatrix, they sent me two M bolts on accident (mazda mispackaged one of them), so I have to swap one when it arrives. They are also sending me the competition torrington bearings... after end play is set it shouldnt be much longer before the motor goes into the car, unless, of course, the car is buried in snow  ... oh and if I decide to order an ECU before the car goes in, I'll be removing the CAS gear from the eccentric shaft... which will probably require going back to that machine shop and having them make me a sleeve to take the gears' place on the shaft... which I'm sure will put me right into winter... so I'll probably hold off on the computer for spring.

Remove it, it's a nasty obstruction of flow... just remember not to use any ghetto methods of plugging the holes left behind, if anything breaks loose in the throttle body it will likely make it's way into the combustion chamber.... resulting in very bad things.

input your zip code & search for welding

almost had that happen to me, i will never use JB weld on my car again, i will do it the right way from now on.

pengaru 11-26-2002 01:26 PM

Ok here are the pics:

http://pengaru.com/~swivel/cars/rx-7/11-26-2002/

the last 10 are right after getting back from the welder, these are unfinished parts so they are not pretty. I'll take pics of the finished product later.

boy am I glad I read this again.... I just bought the JB weld to finish the job on my spare... **** THAT

hayas-fc 11-26-2002 05:04 PM

thanks. where could i find some plugs instead of having to go to a welder

-keegun

pengaru 11-26-2002 07:12 PM

hardware store, just get some threaded plugs... but the nice thing about getting it welded is the ability to grind it down smooth which will be good for flow, if you just plug it you will probably have some ridges or still a small pocket in the side.
