I just bought a 1987 non turbo, the owner said that it had been sitting for almost a year. And I am having couple of problems. the car will not idle, i have to keep the rpm's above 3500 just to keep it running. I have replaced the spark plugs and wires, the fuel pump and filter and i dont know what else i can do. And the other problem is I was driving the car home and there was no power to it. I got it up to about 70mph a couple of times but when i tried to go up a hill it would barely make it. Sombody told me that the apex seals needed to be replaced. If there is any one that could help me plase let me know

I will relate to you some of the same things that were wrong with my car.

I had the engine rebuilt but the car still had idle problems and power problems. The idle problems were fixed mostly by fixing some vacuum leaks that the car had after the rebuild so check for any vacuum leaks. The power problem was completely solved with the timing. The lock nut on the crank angle sensor was loose and the car was out of time so check the timing.

I have been told by so many people that sitting and not driving is very bad for an RX-7. Mine ('87 RX-7 GXL) sat for 2 years prior to the rebuild.

Does the car blow any smoke?

Check the compression to help evaluate the engine. A compression problem could contribute to lack of power and the need for a re-build.

Mine was rebuilt because I definitely needed new apex seals. I was blowing smoke like mad and had no power. Burning oil and everything else. Then the fuel injectors went bad and burned out everything. After the rebuild, the car is stronger than ever. It has more power than the day I bought it brand new. I can't get it to pass inspection but it runs like a dream.

You are on the right forum for help. There are some very knowledgeable guys and girls on this list that can help you. Good luck.

well i'd say step one would be to check the compression, if the motors bad you dont need to waste your time fixing vacuum leaks. if the motors good you get to hunt vacuum leaks down

yeah i thought mine was a vaccum leak but i got my compression checked today and they say the compression is bad..so no vaccum leaks just bad compression..i guess its really time to get that rebuild b4 she blows and the i will be sol
