I've found a 86 NA with 97k miles on it, now in general it seems that ,unless they are very well taken care of, the rotary goes out at about 100k miles, so how much (ball park figure) am I looking at to have someone put a rebuilt engine in it, I don't know if the engine is in good shape for a rebuild or not...

N/a's tend to run forever, especially S4. You can expect 200K easy you of your car if it was taken care of, but even if not, it would take some serious abuse to kill it by 100k.



Get a compression check, and if youre really that worried about it, start saving for a rebuild, and wait it out. Its probably gonna be a while if you do, so dont hold your breath. But if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket, a running engine will be cheaper to rebuild, as the is less of a chance of damage to the housings. And it will also give you a chance to port it.

I was planning on spending around $3000 to get a good 7 with a rebuilt engine with under 20k miles on it, so if I can get this one for $600 then I can use some of the rest to in case I need a rebuild and still be under $3000 I was thinking of doing that. There are also two RX-7 parts cars for $600, but I have no idea whats taken out of them..so for $1200, 1 running 1986 RX-7 with 97k miles and 2 (1987s) for parts. How much would a compression test cost, and they can do that at any local Mazda place right?

If the engine doesn't blow up and just wears out, you can rebuilt it relatively cheaply by replacing the all the seals and gaskets. If there is internal damage, then it is usually cheeper to buy a reman motor from mazda. For the n/a's they are only about 1500.

With that much dough you could just find a really nice n/a in incredible condition.

Thats what I thought, but no one in my area is selling any that aren't on their last leg it seems, about 75 miles away there are lots for sale but within a hour of my house there is like 1 or 2 forsale.
