Does the p/s have a computer or something? Mine will work good some days, then others it wont work at all, anyone else ever run into this?

RotaryVillain 12-26-2007 12:36 PM

no computer. maybe your pump is wearing out. i think carpartswarehouse.com has a good price on em. good luck you can find cheap prices on reman rack on ebay.-

fc3s4utnv 12-26-2007 12:47 PM

Ill just put a manual rack in it for that much trouble, It worked perfectly fine untill my speedo cable broke, replaced it and now it wont work woth a crap.

turborotor 12-26-2007 02:04 PM

Too late now but depending on the year and model they do have computer for the PS.

There are 2 types of PS system, speed sensing and rpm sensing.

Leetheslacker 12-26-2007 04:46 PM

mine doesnt like to work when its reaaal cold out. it does the same thing, works sometimes and sometimes not.

mine is speed sensitive, speed cable would come out of the back of the cluster and it would stop working.

fc3s4utnv 12-31-2007 03:38 PM

so where is the computer at?

teknics 12-31-2007 04:35 PM

computer is to the left of your feet and up under the instrument cluster area of the driver's side. its a little ass thing.

as for p/s not liking to work when it's cold, instead of using p/s fluid try using ATF, atf is thinner and more resistent to sludging up when its real cold. P/S fluid gets super thick when its cold out which overworks the pump and makes the steering feel more difficult.

hell mazda's P/S Fluid is ATF now, Mercon V to be exact.

Truck fleets use ATF in big hydraulic applications where temperature drops low, for the reason Kevin said. Less pump effort and faster operation, even at minus 30. ATF performs much better in the cold. I've seen systems that come from another country and they ask "hydraulic fluid only", and we use them up in Canada pumping ATF instead (because of the cold in winter), lasting years without any type of failure (other than mechanical abuse, not fluid related).

Before anybody goes to get a new pump or a new rack or computer, change the fluid first. Chances are it hasn't been changed in a long time if at all, and it's burnt to ****. Disconnect the return line and steer lock to lock. Refill and look for improvement. P/S, ATF, whatever available is than the garbage in the reservoir you got now.

fc3s4utnv 01-02-2008 09:46 AM

Ill try to change the computer first, it just quit all of the sudden one day and will work sometime snd wont work othere, Temp really doesnt matter.

ColinRX7 01-02-2008 04:12 PM

They are bad for cold solder joints.. That might be why..

Still recommend you change fluid though if you don't know when the last time it was done. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

teknics 01-02-2008 05:47 PM

ATF = hydraulic fluid, colin, thats why you have no problems.

It was changed about two years ago when I swapped the motor out. so it should be fine, I have to find the damn computer first! Knowing my luck it is righ above the alarm brain, which means dash removal time!!!!!!!

teknics 01-03-2008 04:39 PM

i got to it easy when i pulled my p/s out.

seriously its a small grayish box, not all that big at all, directly to the left and a tad above your clutch pedal, look around its the only like ecu there.

Hmm may not be bad then. Ill check it this weekend, hope full one out of an S5 will work.

teknics 01-04-2008 05:12 PM

s5 p/s comp. wont work.

s5 is speed based s4 is something else based.

I know s4's are supposed to by RPM based or some ****, but mine is speed based.
